The Quintessential Instructions on the Five Nails for Clearing Obstacles by the Glorious Naropa The Quintessential Instructions on the Five Nails for Clearing Obstacles by the Glorious Naropa The Quintessential Instructions on the Five Nails for Clearing Obstacles by the Glorious Naropa: Homage! Homage to all the lamas! Regarding the quintessential instructions for clearing obstacles on the path, there are two points: namely, showing the characteristics of experience and the methods for correcting faults. That is to say, for example, when a farmer cultivates the fields in spring, there will be an abundant autumn harvest as a result. If there is no autumn harvest, then the cultivation has become meaningless. Likewise, it is impossible for a yogi who has abandoned worldly activities and cultivates the path properly not to have the fruit of meditative experience arise. If there is no experience, then the meditation has become meaningless. Therefore, the arising of the stages of experience is the fruit of diligence in meditation; that is, one finds by searching, it happens by doing, and it is accomplished by accomplishing. There are two ways in which that experience arises: gently and intensely. Or there are three: the experience of qualities, the experience of neither faults nor qualities, and the experience of faults. The first has three. The experience of method is when one feels that the body is spacious and comfortable, warmth arises in the body, and all external and internal phenomena appear as bliss. The second, the experience of wisdom, is when the wisdom of individually realizing the nature of all phenomena arises, the signs of the object of samadhi subside, one abides clearly and unmovingly without conceptualization, one does not sense the movement of the winds, and one does not sense the existence of the body. The third, the experience of the inseparability of method and wisdom, is when those experiences arise in conjunction, and at the time of generating bliss, one experiences the inseparability of bliss and emptiness without conceptualization, and when various kinds of bliss appear, one experiences the inseparability of appearance and emptiness because they are of one taste in emptiness, and likewise, great compassion that arises spontaneously without effort for all sentient beings who have not realized this, and experiencing the inseparability of emptiness and compassion, and so forth. These three experiences are all virtuous, and one should strive to enhance them more and more through the effort of cultivating the path. The experience that is neither beneficial nor harmful is like when all sorts of things grow on a summer meadow, all sorts of things will appear in the experience of a yogi.

In the periods of co-emergence and subsequent attainment, there is no certainty whether or not this experience will occur. To illustrate with a few examples, the appearance may be a blazing fire, being submerged in water, sinking into the ground, being destroyed by wind, day turning into night, night becoming extremely bright, seeing many realms of the world, a tigress grinding her teeth, being surrounded by a host of demons making terrifying sounds, being surrounded by a host of gods preaching the Dharma and giving prophecies, oneself transforming into various bodies, having incomplete senses and limbs, dwelling in the middle of the sky, and so on. Even a dried human head making the sound of a horse is impossible, but in the experience of a yogi, such things may also occur. Since those experiences are neither beneficial nor harmful, there is no need to examine their good or bad aspects, nor is there a need to transform them. They are merely signs of the mind abiding within. There are five ways in which rough experiences arise as Dharma: if the five elements are not in balance, it will generate the pain of illness, the suffering of death and rebirth, intense afflictions, various thoughts that distract from samadhi, and various internal and external events will arise. Regarding the methods for correcting these faults, there are five nails that remove obstacles on the path. First, the nail for extracting the essence of illness is explained, its meaning is: if those pains of illness are not removed, they will become an obstacle to meditation and will destroy the path of samadhi. Through the pith instructions taught from above and below, if those pains of illness are pacified, then this experience will cause samadhi to increase more and more. Because it can remove the fear of the path and can extract the essence of illness, it is called the five nails. This has three aspects: explaining the cause, characteristics, and methods of correcting the pain. Among them, the first, the cause of the arising of pain, is: the channels, winds, and bindus. Each of them also has three: the male channel is young, the female channel is not young, and the hermaphrodite channel is balanced. The male wind is strong, rough, and difficult to tame, when the wind is seized, the body throbs and shakes. The female wind is slow, gentle, and easy to tame, when the wind is seized, the body becomes numb and trembles. The hermaphrodite wind is transformed by the conditions of the container. Male bliss has less of the non-conceptual component and more of the bliss component, that will also produce bumps on the body, bring pain, and the object
