Those who wish to attain complete and perfect enlightenment, because it is the same as the path of the intermediate being, it is called the common preliminary practice. Like this, the suffering of samsara, even kind and loving parents, and powerful gods, nagas, and local deities, Brahma and Indra, who are considered powerful in the world, the great powerful, fierce, and terrifying Vajra, etc., worldly gods cannot protect, because they themselves have not been liberated from the fear of samsara. Therefore, the one who has exhausted all faults and perfected all qualities is the Buddha, so he is worthy of refuge. Because he can protect, one must ask him for refuge. The path to the state of Buddhahood is the Dharma, and the companion on the path is the Sangha, so one takes refuge in these three. Moreover, taking refuge until one's own death is the root of the eight branches of individual liberation vows, which is the same as the path of the Hearers and Solitary Realizers, but here, taking refuge until one attains Bodhi is called the preliminary practice that is common. The uncommon preliminary practice, bestowed by the all-knowing Sixth, is the concise practice of the preliminary practice with generation and completion stages, called "Shi Hara." Because this Dharma is closely related to this teaching and has great blessings, one should practice this. Because the text here is clear and obvious, there is no need to explain it. In front is the wish-fulfilling tree in the middle of the ocean, the trunk with one root and five branches. In the center of the branches, is the lion throne, lotus, and... Above the sun and moon, is the root guru, surrounded by Vajradhara and lineage gurus. In front is the Yidam, on the right is the Buddha, behind is the Dharma, and on the left is the Sangha. Below the seat cushion are the Dharma protectors and guardians, each surrounded by a sea of retinues of the same kind. On the newly grown grass by the sea, all the mothers pervading space are dwelling here. With one-pointed mind, take refuge and generate Bodhicitta. From now until the essence of Bodhi, to the Guru, Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, with sincere mind, I pray for refuge. Having clearly visualized the refuge field in this way, recite the following words three times from the bottom of your heart. Diligently take refuge morning and evening, offer the essence of food and drink to the Three Jewels, no matter what suffering occurs, do not seek refuge other than the Three Jewels. Do not prostrate to non-Buddhist deities, abandon harming sentient beings, and stay away from bad friends.

Do not rely on those with wrong views towards the Three Jewels. Show respect even to a mere representation of the Buddha's form. Show respect even to a single letter of the alphabet. Show respect even to someone just wearing monastic robes. If you do so, you will be protected from all fears. As it is said in the Nirvana Sutra: "Having taken refuge in the Three Jewels, you will attain fearlessness." This has immeasurable benefits. If the qualities of taking refuge were to be described, they would be as limitless as the sky. So it is said. Furthermore, the scriptures say to have impartial love and compassion for all sentient beings. It is not enough for oneself alone to be liberated from suffering. The number of times each sentient being has not been one's mother is such that even if this great earth were made into balls the size of juniper berries, this great earth would not be enough. Those who have been our mothers have given us their bodies, their lives, and have bestowed upon us the teachings and resources of the world, and have nurtured us with great kindness. Therefore, to abandon these elderly mother sentient beings in the prison of samsara and to go and sit in comfort oneself, what could be more shameless, ungrateful, and short-sighted than that? Therefore, first cultivate loving-kindness. First, cultivate it towards someone dear to your heart, as it is easy to arise. Then, towards the root guru and parents. Then, towards siblings and relatives. Then, towards your own homeland, region, and community. Then, towards enemies. Then, towards the entire Tibetan region. Then, gradually cultivate it towards the entire world and the first, second, and third thousandfold worlds. Finally, cultivate it towards the ten directions of the world and all sentient beings. The method of cultivation is to sincerely think from the depths of your heart, "How wonderful it would be if those sentient beings possessed all happiness and the cause of happiness, all virtues." That is to say, without distinguishing between enemies and friends, if all sentient beings desire happiness, and if no conflicts arise because of this, that is immeasurable loving-kindness. If such loving-kindness arises, then all fears such as fire, water, poison, and weapons will be pacified, one will not fall into the lower realms, and one will be born in the realm of Brahma, etc., which has great benefits. As it is said in the Moon Lamp Sutra: "In hundreds of millions of lands, however many immeasurable offerings there may be, constantly offering to those noble beings cannot compare to the number of thoughts of loving-kindness." So it is said. By cultivating loving-kindness in this way, it is easy to generate compassion. Those parents, all sentient beings, are in the lower realms.
