The lands are seen as impure, ashes, and fire pits, inedible. Sentient beings with inner obscurations have bellies as large as Mount Sumeru, limbs thin, throats as thin as a horse's tail, and mouths as small as the eye of a needle, unable to escape hunger. Whatever enters their bellies turns into fire, suffering from thirst and burning. One month in the human realm is counted as one night, lasting for five hundred years. Animals in the dark continent within the ocean eat their own flesh, the large eat the small, and the small stab the large. These scattered animals die for the sake of meat, horns, oil, pearls, fur, and bones. They are forced to plow even when unable, forced to carry even when unable, and slaughtered after being cared for with kindness for a long time. These are the things seen. Some long-lived ones can live for a kalpa, while others die every day, uncertain. Asuras are jealous of the pleasures of the gods, with no time for happiness in their minds. They fight twice a year, unable to die without their necks and upper and lower bodies separating, so they are all thrown into the dark continent, suffering. The gods between the Four Great Kings and the Thirty-Three Heavens, although possessing happiness, sometimes have to fight with asuras. Distracted by play and enjoyment, they do not know when their lifespan and merit will be exhausted, and unpleasant sounds are heard. Splendid silks, flowers, and decorations become old, emit foul odors, and friends leave. Clearly seeing that they will fall into the lower realms in the next life, there is no way to avoid falling into them, and the suffering is immeasurable. Humans are like being imprisoned in an impure pit in the womb, suffering from birth, old age, sickness, and death, and after death, suffering from fear and immeasurable suffering in the bardo. In short, all places in samsara are like fire pits and prisons. All the happiness of samsara is like a feast being led to the slaughterhouse. Sentient beings in hell are tormented by the fires of hell, pretas are tormented by hunger and thirst, animals are tormented by being eaten by each other, humans are tormented by living and drinking, and gods are tormented by carelessness. In a place as small as the tip of a needle in samsara, there is never any happiness. One should recite and contemplate in this way, without attachment to the happiness and prosperity of samsara, desiring to attain liberation, peace, and nirvana, which is the path of the intermediate being. If one desires to attain the fruit of a Shravaka Arhat or a Pratyekabuddha, it is intermediate.
