If the root of such mind is severed, the leaves of samsara will wither. For example, even if darkness has been accumulated for a thousand kalpas, a single lamp can dispel all the darkness. Similarly, in a single moment of the mind's luminosity, it can eliminate the ignorance and obscurations accumulated over kalpas. Thus it is said. In the Whispered Transmission of the Vajra Verses, it says: By resting in the great ordinary self-nature, in the vast expanse of unchanging space, one will obtain the Dharmakaya body, free from birth and death. Thus it is said. From the Secret Treasury Tantra: The mind is like a precious lamp, illuminating the nature of ignorance and darkness. The rising of the moon of the mind alleviates the suffering of desire and so on. The rain of compassion from the mind satisfies the ashes of afflictions. Other appearances apart from one's own mind, and Buddhas apart from the mind, do not exist and should not be sought elsewhere. Thus it is said. Whoever possesses this precious essence of mind, all should revere them. The heroes and dakinis of the ten directions should always protect, guard, and conceal them. Praises, extolments, offerings, and so forth should be made. They will conquer limitless beings and utterly destroy the armies of enemies and demons. They will easily attain the supreme bliss of great bliss. Other than crossing this river of samsara, there is no other way to be certain of liberation. Other than winning this battle of afflictions, no other hero can win on the battlefield. Other than being liberated by this rope of craving that binds one to samsara, one cannot be liberated by any other conditioned action. For those who have broken vows and commitments, this is also the best method for restraint and restoration. For hunger, thirst, fear, and various sufferings, this is also the best protector and refuge. For illnesses, poisons, and various sufferings, this is also the best healing medicine. Thus it is said. In the Sutra of Showing the Meaning of Truth: If one knows the nature of the mind, one will know the nature of all dharmas. The mind will not be attached to the objects of appearance. If there is no attachment, afflictions will not arise. If afflictions do not arise, one will not wander in samsara. Thus it is said. Son of lineage, if you do not understand the nature of the mind, even if you make all the efforts of body and speech in performing virtuous deeds such as giving, you will not attain the Dharmakaya.
