Reaching the peak is the best. The saintly devotee said: These collections of terms and words about Dharma, if not combined with experience, will become the seeds of arrogance. Therefore, do not be infatuated with empty talk. As it is said, it is very important to practice Dharma rather than just hearing it. In general, the higher seeing (lhag mthong) in Dharma is said to be the act of observing and analyzing, so one should thoroughly search for one's own mind inside and outside the body. One should thoroughly and decisively search for its shape, color, size, and so on. If one cannot find it, one should also search for the one who thinks they cannot find it. One should thoroughly search whether this mind is existent, non-existent, both existent and non-existent, or neither existent nor non-existent. One must be determined about what one's own mind is like. After searching in this way, one finds that it is not existent, having no shape or color; nor is it non-existent, because it can remember everything and runs unimpeded; it is also not both existent and non-existent, because it is not any of them; it seems unable to say anything, but whatever it says is only similar and does not contradict each other, and one sees something unique. At this time, the body should be arranged in the seven-point posture of Vairochana: legs in vajra posture or half-lotus posture, spine straight, hands in meditation mudra, tongue touching the upper palate, neck slightly bent, arms extended, eyes gazing at the space in front of the tip of the nose. Then, meticulously count twenty-one breaths going in and out. After that, relax the body and mind, and rest in the mind itself, without letting the mind wander. Although some famous Tibetan scholars oppose this, the great Indian adept Rahula said: The mind bound by desire, if relaxed, will undoubtedly be liberated. Tilopa also said: Rest in the unaltered, natural state, relax it. If you untie the bonds, there is no doubt that you will be liberated. Therefore, do not doubt. Observing in this relaxed way, the mind does not wander but remains still, this is called "abiding." The mind is not still, it wanders everywhere, this is called "moving." The awareness of abiding or moving, this is called "awareness." Rangjung Dorje (the Third Karmapa, 1284-1339) said: The so-called Mahamudra, this great sound, refers to one's own mind. If you do not recognize your own mind, it refers to this flickering thing that says "my mind, my mind." Therefore, is merely abiding, moving, and awareness Mahamudra?

Just considering someone who knows Yerna Katshar (transliteration) to be among those who know how to read. Remaining and moving are not Mahamudra; there is no Mahamudra apart from remaining and moving. This is the first experience, like water on a steep mountain, thoughts arise one after another, many and many, thinking that I cannot meditate, feeling like I cannot stay still for even a moment. Regarding this, there are three ways to cultivate: superior, intermediate, and inferior. The superior one is to cultivate whatever arises without modifying its essence. Shantipa said, "Let it stay if it stays, let it go if it goes. Do not interfere, let it be." The intermediate one is to look at each thought that arises, and it will disappear without a trace. Even if you stay in that state for a while, a thought will arise, look at it as before, let it naturally dissolve, and continue to do so. The inferior one is, if the mind wanders far away, like pulling it back, and then observing it as if placing the mind in your own heart, it will naturally subside. Continue to do so, this is called the meditation hook. Like this, the three methods of cultivation, the time spent reciting is short, clear and distinct, abandoning, the number of observations is large, this is the immediate secret of observation. The Kagyu lamas say, do not meditate in a bad way, but meditate in a good way, that is the meaning of this. Then, the second experience is like water in a canyon, sometimes many thoughts arise, sometimes they do not arise and remain. At this time, when the mind remains, it feels happy, and if it is very scattered, it feels unhappy, such a phenomenon occurs. Regarding this, the method of cultivation is: If the mind is very scattered, relax the body and mind, and observe in relaxation. When the mind remains, look straight at its essence. There is no good or bad in remaining and moving, do not be happy or unhappy. Do not think that thoughts are a fault. Do not deliberately pursue the absence of thoughts. Observe the essence of whatever arises, this is what the Kagyu and Yang Gonpa (transliteration) say. Cultivating like this, the third experience arises like the Ganges River. In the midst of a great experience of remaining, a little bit of thought will arise. Among them, people of the wind element type are very scattered and will not have a great experience of remaining. People of the water element type have more experiences of bliss, and the body and mind feel comfortable and relaxed. People of the fire element type have more experiences of clarity, and the experience of clarity is clear. People of the earth element type have more absence of thoughts, fewer thoughts, and an experience of remaining.
