Also, if the four root vows are intact, one is counted as a monk who holds the precepts. The novice monk and the fully ordained monk, because their precepts are weighty, are difficult to break. If one does not kill a human being or a being that has taken human form, killing other living beings does not break the precepts. If gold is one-sixteenth of a sho, and one does not steal valuable property, small faults do not cause the precepts to be broken. For the same owner, small things, if stolen with the body, the value of rice etc. equivalent to one-sixteenth of a sho of gold, taking what is not given breaks the precepts. If one does not engage in impure conduct, even if the vows decline, the precepts are not broken. Harming and deceiving others, and without signs of having attained clairvoyance, saying that one has, such lies of a guru about human Dharma, and beings such as gods and demons, saying that one sees what one has not seen, this breaks the precept of lying. Lies such as jokes, and lies that are of great benefit to others, do not break the precepts. Although alcohol has inconceivable faults, it does not break the precepts. Similarly, abandoning the mind of enlightenment etc., the remaining transgressions of the Sangha etc., even if the transgressions are very serious, do not break the precepts. Protecting the four root vows like life, and other transgressions, striving to restore and confess the precepts, this is the custom of all monks nowadays. Accumulating merit and purifying sins, therefore it is called restoration, so how is restoration done? Without a Sangha, without a cause for doing, a monk living alone, it is said that one can bless the restoration, or practice the restoration of calm abiding. In order to purify those transgressions, meditating on calm abiding samadhi, in reality it is the restoration of calm abiding. If one does not guard the precepts, even if generosity etc. is vast, one will not obtain a good body, one will be reborn as wealthy beings such as nagas. If one does not guard the precepts purely, like seeds on a stone slab, it is impossible for crops of virtue to grow. If the precepts are broken, it is said that one will obtain the bodies of hell beings, hungry ghosts, and animals hundreds of thousands of times. Committing one of the seven sins etc., if one does not properly confess and restore the precepts, one will fall into an evil rebirth once. Therefore it is called a transgression. Therefore, for transgressions that have not lost their root, one should strive to confess. The Sugata (Shakyamuni) and the sixteen elders, and

Om! I pray to the assembly of four hundred. May I, my disciples, and all those in the lineage, be free from the defilement of immoral faults. May we be perfectly pure in our discipline, and become a beautiful ornament to the teachings of the Sage. Please grant your blessings. Spoken by Rahula Asya. Mangalam! Bhavantu! Homage to Bodhisattvaya! The so-called Greater and Lesser Vehicles are distinguished by the magnitude of compassion. Fearing the suffering of samsara, and wishing to attain liberation for oneself alone, that is the Lesser Vehicle. Not abandoning even a single sentient being, who have been our parents in many lifetimes, unable to bear their suffering in samsara with great compassion, and wishing to liberate them, that is the Greater Vehicle. There will never be an end to sentient beings. As long as space exists, wishing to benefit sentient beings, one does not wish to quickly become a Buddha. Even if one attains Buddhahood, one still benefits beings in the manner of a Bodhisattva. Among Bodhisattvas, that is the greatest Bodhisattva. Like the three lords of the family (Avalokiteshvara, Manjushri, Vajrapani), such Bodhisattvas are rare. I prostrate and take refuge in them. Generate the mind of enlightenment like a shepherd, like gathering all the cattle and sheep and walking behind them. That great Bodhisattva, after placing all sentient beings in perfect Buddhahood, then wishes to become a Buddha himself. He says, "As long as samsara exists, I will not become a Buddha." Other Bodhisattvas, after attaining Buddhahood themselves, pray that effortless, spontaneously accomplished activity may benefit beings. This is like a king. Without this, it is impossible. Without this, there is no fruit of Buddhahood. Just like a human king, after perfecting himself, he wants to benefit his subjects. Generating the mind of enlightenment is the same. A Bodhisattva with diligence, abandoning his own happiness, with great compassion for the sake of sentient beings, if he benefits even one sentient being, even if he is certain to be born in hell, he is not afraid and does not regret it. If he sees a hungry sentient being, he cuts his own flesh and gives it to them. Even if he is not without illness, he endures suffering. He has no regard for body and life, and does not desire his own happiness, sentient beings.
