The deity one relies on is a bigot, that is a great wrong view. Jetsun Milarepa said that there is no other kinsman deity other than the Three Jewels. There is no partiality in the Buddha's mind, although he looks at all beings equally, it is difficult to receive the Buddha's compassion if you do not sincerely believe and respect, and do not rely on refuge. That is because you do not believe in yourself, that is your own fault, not that the Buddha is biased. To take refuge in order to be liberated from the suffering of samsara is the inferior refuge of the Hinayana. To take refuge so that one can benefit all beings someday is the middle refuge. All beings are parents, and oneself and all beings take refuge, that is the supreme refuge of the Mahayana. The teacher is the unsurpassed Buddha, the protector is the precious Dharma, the guide is the Sangha of the noble ones, and I and all beings take refuge in the external Three Jewels. The root of blessing is the root guru of kindness, the root of accomplishment is the yidam deity, the root of activity is the dakini, and I and all beings take refuge in the inner Three Jewels. The Dharmakaya of emptiness pervading all, the Sambhogakaya of clear luminosity, the Nirmanakaya of various unobstructed manifestations, and I and all beings take refuge in the secret Three Jewels. The body is the Sangha Jewel, the speech is the source of the Dharma, the mind is the essence of the Buddha, the qualities are the assembly of yidam deities, the activity is the dakinis and Dharma protectors, and I and all beings take refuge in the guru who is the embodiment of all the Jewels. If one recognizes that one's own mind is the Buddha and has unwavering confidence, then one has taken refuge in the Buddha. To abide in that state, because there is no refuge more supreme than that, is to take refuge in the Dharma. If one constantly practices that meaning, one enters the ranks of the Sangha, so one has taken refuge in the Sangha, that is the ultimate refuge. This little song of the key points of refuge, on the ninth day of the month of the bird in the year of the horse, arose from experience and was spoken spontaneously.

Below, gods and humans desire happiness and well-being; vows of good wishes are the lowest. Abandoning dwelling in samsara, desiring liberation, is the middling renunciation of individual liberation. The thought of all beings wishing to attain Buddhahood is the most supreme Mahayana discipline. There is no difference in the manner of requesting and the manner of guarding; it is through the difference in intention that they become three. Abandon prostrations and offerings to the gods and supports of external Bon and Hindu traditions. Abandon thoughts and actions that harm sentient beings; do not associate with Hindus. The difference in refuge lies in the precepts. As long as the statue is well-made, that is sufficient; as long as the scripture has one letter, that is sufficient; as long as the Sangha wears yellow robes, that is sufficient; with faith and respect, the precepts of refuge are these three. Take refuge regularly in the morning and evening; offer the best part of whatever you eat to the Three Jewels. Whatever sickness or suffering arises, abandon rituals that are not in accordance with the Three Jewels, even if they are beneficial. If these nine are not guarded in this way, the benefits of refuge will not arise, it is said. If the vows of refuge are not present in the mindstream, then empowerments, vows, generation of bodhicitta, etc., will not be attained even if requested, just like pouring water into a bottomless vessel. Outsiders, insiders, monks, and Bonpos are distinguished by this refuge. For example, just as different clans and castes are distinguished by their leaders. The eight-branch fasting is what the Buddha gave to householders. There are only eight things to be guarded in it. The duration is to guard for one full day and night. The vow of eating one meal is, on top of that, to sit on one seat, as stated in the Sutra of the Essence of Earth. The eight-branch fasting is to guard one seat at one time. In that, taking a bath and removing shoes are good deeds done by Lord Atisha. Fasting is spoken of in the Amoghapasha and the Dharani of Eleven Faces. When guarding one seat during the day, meat, bones, and fat should also be abandoned. During the time of verbal silence during the day, food and drink, even a drop of water, should be abandoned. Reciting mantras is to remember in the mind. In this way, two days of fasting is one. From the first to the sixteenth, guarding is called the White Side, and at that time, if the rituals are not interrupted and the long dharani is recited, then the recitation of Eleven Faces is completed. Fasting and the White Side can also be guarded by monks. Eating one meal can also be guarded. The eight-branch fasting is,
