Even with heroic courage and strength, one cannot stop the Lord of Death, Yama. Like the Tirthika King Kaladhana and others, although they can rain down stones, and although they can make crows fall to the ground with a threatening gesture, they cannot stop the Lord of Death with their power. Minister Rinchen, Minister Gar, Apo Changren, and others, even if their words and strategies are clever, they cannot stop the Lord of Death with words and strategies. From the formation of the kalpa until now, countless people have vanished like crops in the autumn harvest, disappearing one after another, with not a single one left alive. Years, months, days, and nights pass in sequence, and life is exhausted in an instant without being felt. From the moment of birth in the womb, at every moment, without missing a single step, one goes step by step towards death. Nowadays, in the degenerate age, it is said that the lifespan is only about forty years, and even that is uncertain. Some die in the womb, some die as soon as they are born, some die as soon as they can crawl, some die as soon as they can run. Whether young, middle-aged, or old, there is no certainty about lifespan in this world. The body is an impure substance of flesh and blood, a nest of diseases of wind, bile, and phlegm, unable to endure hunger, thirst, heat, and cold. No matter how carefully cherished, it will eventually break like a clay pot. Even if protected in a hundred ways, it will eventually be invaded by demons and spirits. Even if wrapped in silk, it will eventually rot and stink. For this impermanent and meaningless illusory body, who can predict when impermanence will come? Without thinking of these things, one indulges in all kinds of sins and non-virtues, giving full play to one's intelligence. What demon has entered the heart? Hearing that Zhang San died and Li Si died, having heard of the deaths of hundreds and thousands of people, yet never thinking that one will also die, what black ignorance has obscured one's mind? Knowing full well that one will die, yet preparing nothing, only thinking of dwelling here, by what kind of king is one deceived? Those who travel for only a month need to prepare so much provisions. If one must go to a distant place from which one can never return, yet prepares not a single provision, what is one thinking? Hearing that robbers are coming to steal horses and wealth, one hurriedly seeks a place to hide. But the enemy that takes life and leads one to hell—the Lord of Death—one does not know when he will come, yet one does not think of escaping. What is one thinking? Never thinking of death, yet indulging in non-virtue and sin, truly a madman!

Please look with compassion upon us all, Avalokiteshvara! The jewel in the lotus!). A song of remembering impermanence and death. Spoken by Raga Asya on the eighth day of the bird month of the horse year (Tibetan calendar). Alas! The suffering of samsara, Is so terrifying and unbearable. We need a refuge to protect us from it. Parents and relatives, Even with good intentions, cannot protect us. Gods, nagas, and local deities, though powerful, But they themselves Have not escaped from samsara, how can they protect others? Eliminating all faults, Perfecting all qualities, Only refuge in the Fully Enlightened Buddha can protect. That is the ultimate refuge. The Buddha is the path to Buddhahood, The Dharma is the way to practice the path, as refuge. Like a helper on that path, The Sangha is the refuge as a friend. Having taken refuge in the Buddha, If we practice the Dharma he taught, We ourselves will enter the ranks of the Sangha. Taking refuge in the Buddha with intention, Taking refuge through the Dharma with action. The Buddha has the ten powers, ten freedoms, And the four fearlessnesses, etc., The unique Dharmas are eighteen, etc., Qualities are inconceivable, Therefore, it is worthy to take refuge in him. From countless eons, To protect all beings without exception, He practiced the hardships of the ten perfections, Made wishes to benefit beings. Like this, during the six periods of day and night, The Buddha observes with his Buddha-eye, Thinking about who he should benefit. Always loving like a mother to her only child. Taking refuge in him, he will protect. With his vajra ear, always, Listening to what each sentient being says, Hearing separately with undistracted hearing. Therefore, he hears the refuge taken. All sentient beings always, The good and bad thoughts that arise in their minds, Whatever arises, he knows separately without confusion. Therefore, he knows whether there is faith and respect. The birth and death of sentient beings, Illness, suffering, sorrow, etc., Whatever happens, he always observes separately. If there is an opportunity to benefit them, He does not slacken even for a moment, He will immediately give protection. The results of karma that are seen and experienced in this life, Even the Buddha cannot change. Apart from that, even if there is bad karma, He has the power to lighten the karma, He can transfer the bad karma outside. Or he can lighten the heavy karma. The capacities of sentient beings are immeasurable, For whom, in what way is beneficial, (The Buddha) has the corresponding means and
