Ah! Accumulate food and wealth through various means. Therefore, after entering the door of Dharma, accumulate merits through various means. The primary merit is generosity. If one is a householder, it is said that one should offer upwards and give downwards with food and wealth. Regarding this, there are two ways to choose a field of merit. If one does not have high realization, then choosing the field of merit upwards is profound. Compared to giving food to hundreds of thousands of ordinary people, it is better to give to one pure Brahmin. Compared to giving to hundreds of thousands of Brahmins, it is better to give to one monk who upholds pure vows. Compared to giving to hundreds of thousands of monks, it is better to give to one novice monk. Compared to giving to hundreds of thousands of novice monks, it is better to give to one fully ordained monk. Compared to giving to hundreds of thousands of fully ordained monks, it is said that it is better to give to one who possesses the realization of Mahamudra. The root guru is like parents, the bodhisattvas of the ten bhumis, and those who teach the vast and profound Dharma, offering to them has immeasurable benefits. For those with high realization, choosing the field of merit downwards, giving to the sick and the poor, even the Buddhas will rejoice. Even offering to the Buddha will not please him, therefore it is better to take care of the miserable. In ultimate truth, there is no high or low in the field of merit. Because one should visualize all sentient beings as the deity's Buddha-body, it is said that there is no difference in the field of merit. These are the rules for householders and mantra holders. The most important of generosity is Dharma-giving, material giving cannot compare to it. For those who sincerely desire the Dharma, even without offerings, give empowerment and transmission. Provide favorable conditions and necessities for life with this. Water should be given to the pretas (hungry ghosts). Leftovers, etc., should be given to birds and dogs, etc. Other than that, food and clothing, etc., because there is nothing that does not belong to the monastery's property, one should not give excessively even to poor people, because the monastery's property will cause great harm to them. Therefore, in Nālandā (approximately 450-650 CE) in India, the leftover rice, etc., of the Sangha were not given to birds, dogs, and beggars, but were buried in a pit, and this practice has great significance. It is permissible to give to monks. The so-called "suddenly arrived Sangha," it is permissible to give food and clothing to poor monks. However, it is said that one should not give away one's own three robes and bowl. Householders, especially for those who need and are beneficial, poison, weapons, and evil mantras, etc., are not permissible to give. Ink, pens, paper, and books, etc., giving them will increase wisdom.
