Take understanding of these. All dharmas are emptiness, emptiness itself. Not the realm of speech, thought, or expression, like the center of clear sky. The thought arises, "It is like this," and understanding dawns. When definite knowledge arises about that, it is said to be the view of emptiness. That is the general meaning of emptiness, meditating in that way, it is called the analytical meditation of a Paṇḍita. Most Geshes practice in this way. In the tradition of Mahāmudrā, like that, emptiness falls into the nature of knowable objects. The understanding of the view is dry, because it itself is conceptual thought. The understanding of meditation is not realization. By reciting the mantra of Subhāva (藏文:སུ་བྷ་ཝ།,梵文天城体:सुभाव,梵文罗马拟音:subhāva,self-nature), land, stones, mountains, rocks, cities, etc., all are empty without existence. Meditate with the mind as if it were the sky. Most mantra practitioners meditate in this way. First, meditate on the maṇḍala deities. Then, the outer world, the realm of existence, meditate on dissolving into the celestial palace. All sentient beings, the inner essence, also dissolve into the retinue of the maṇḍala deities. The retinue dissolves into the main deity. The main deity dissolves into the Hūṃ (藏文:ཧཱུྃ,梵文天城体:हुं,梵文罗马拟音:hūṃ,Hūṃ) at the heart. The Hūṃ also dissolves upwards, dissolving into the nāda (藏文:ནཱ་ད,梵文天城体:नाद,梵文罗马拟音:nāda,sound) like the tip of a hair. That also disappears, it is emptiness. Meditating as if it were the sky, that is the emptiness of a ritual performer. In that tradition of Mahāmudrā, if emptiness falls into elaboration, that is also a series of conceptual thoughts, it is not the realization of meditation. The root of being born in saṃsāra is, because of clinging to self. The method to subdue that clinging to self, requires the wisdom of realizing selflessness. What is called "self"? This body is not, bottle, leg, conch, teeth, and eyes. The body is separate parts, each one is not the self, therefore, there is no self in the body. The mind is also not the self, without form, color, or substance. Not abiding in one place, scattering in many directions. Therefore, the mind is also not the self, if both body and mind are not the self, then where is the self that is not body and mind? What is called "self" is merely dependent. Not real, not established in meaning. Meditating like this pacifies clinging to self. If one realizes selflessness, one is liberated. Thus, the wise meditate. In the tradition of Mahāmudrā, meditating in this way does not lead to realization. Emptiness falls into the antidote. What is to be abandoned and the antidote are not separate, liberation comes from looking at the nature of whatever arises. Like this, there are three mistakes of emptiness. Old man of the handprint

Though not a vast practice, for those who haven't realized Mahamudra, practicing it is said to slightly diminish obscurations. The Vipassana of the common vehicle, a small song, Raga Asya, spoken on the sixteenth day of the Horse year's (Tibetan calendar) middle month. May there be auspiciousness! Without needing to study scriptures, the means to directly realize emptiness, the introduction to Mahamudra is the method of instant recognition. The root of all phenomena is none other than one's own mind, as stated in all scriptures and instructions. Even if fools analyze with reason, the analyzer and sufferer is one's own mind. The five poisons and afflictions arise from the mind, faith and devotion arise from the mind. The mind is the cause of wandering in the lower realms of samsara, the mind is the cause of attaining higher realms and liberation. The body is like an empty shell, like rotten clothes. Samsara and Nirvana, the root of all is the mind, therefore, if the root of the mind is severed, then the root of all phenomena is severed. If one sandalwood tree dries up, then a hundred thousand leaves also dry up. Therefore, one's own mind, where does it pervade inside and outside the body? What is its shape and color? One should search for it in the body. If it's not in the body, then in the outer four directions, eight intermediate directions, ten directions of above and below, search for it at the edge of the sky. If that mind is not found, isn't the one thinking 'not found' the mind? If the mind is not there when looked at, then from where do feelings of joy and sorrow arise? From where do hatred and desire come? What is the difference between a mindless earth and stone? Thus, when thoroughly investigated, the nature of mind is not existent, it has no shape, color, or substance. Mind is not non-existent, it variously appears and wanders everywhere. Mind is not singular, the eight consciousnesses variously emanate. Mind is not different, its essence is the single nature of mind. Mind is not permanent, impermanent, it variously changes and appears. Mind is not annihilated, it continuously and incessantly throbs. There are various movements in the mind, initially it is unborn from anywhere, in the middle it does not abide anywhere, and finally, where has it gone? There is no cessation here. The Middle Way, free from the eight extremes, is inherently present in the mind. Although that meaning is clear in the mind, it cannot be expressed in words, like a mute person eating sugar. Inexpressible, unthinkable, unspeakable, it directly appears. Vipassana
