Even if one understands and can explain, if one has not received (transmission) from a single lama beforehand, even if one practices oneself, realization will not arise, and if one speaks to others, the faults and obscurations are immeasurable. If one has received (transmission) beforehand, even if it is not imprinted in the mind, by looking at the instruction manual and practicing oneself, realization will arise gradually as explained in the scriptures. It is very beneficial to explain to others. Those fortunate disciples will generate realization. Even if it does not arise, the benefit of receiving the transmission will occur. This is also due to the kindness of that first lama. If one has not received the vows and transmission from the lama beforehand, even if one keeps the vows, there is no benefit of keeping the vows. Even if there is merit, it is only intermediate virtue, and it will not become the cause of attaining Buddhahood. If one keeps the vows after receiving the vows, benefits will arise. Even if one gives the vows and transmission to others, one will receive the vows. This is also due to the kindness of that first lama. Even if one finds the sadhana texts and knows how to practice, if one has not received (transmission) from a single lama beforehand, even if one practices, it will not be accomplished. Even if one recites mantras for a long time, even if diseases and evil spirits are slightly pacified, it is said that one will be born in the three lower realms in the future. If one practices after receiving (transmission) from the lama, it will be quickly accomplished. This life will be protected, and the next life will be guided. This is also due to the kindness of that lama! Even if one visualizes the perfect Buddha on the crown of the head and prays with one-pointed devotion, because there is no connection with that Buddha, it is difficult to receive blessings and the distance is far. Visualize the lama as inseparable from that Buddha, and pray with one-pointed devotion. Because the compassion and blessings of the Buddha are great, and there is a connection with that lama, the blessings of that Buddha will quickly descend. If the lama is a definite Buddha, visualizing the actual body like father and son, it is easy to grasp the key points, the blessings are quick, and faith and pure appearances will increase, so it is good. If one visualizes the ordinary lama as the actual body, like carving a pattern on a wooden bowl, whatever blessings that lama has, and whatever afflictions, five poisons, diseases, and evil spirits there are, will all enter together, so it is not permissible to visualize the actual body. In essence, inseparable from that lama, visualizing the form as the body of the Buddha is profound. If you want longevity, visualize Amitayus (Tibetan: ཚེ་དཔག་མེད།, Sanskrit Devanagari: अमिताभ, Sanskrit Romanization: Amitābha, Literal Chinese Meaning: Immeasurable Light). If you want to be born in the Sukhavati Pure Land, visualize Amitabha (Tibetan: འོད་དཔག་མེད།, Sanskrit Devanagari: अमिताभ, Sanskrit Romanization: Amitābha, Literal Chinese Meaning: Immeasurable Light). If you want to generate compassion for the benefit of sentient beings, visualize Avalokiteśvara (Tibetan: སྤྱན་རས་གཟིགས།, Sanskrit Devanagari: अवलोकितेश्वर, Sanskrit Romanization: Avalokiteśvara, Literal Chinese Meaning: Observing the Sounds of the World). If you want to save all fears, visualize the form of Tara.

If you wish to pacify all diseases, pray to the Medicine Buddha. If you wish to increase the power of blessings, pray to the form of Orgyen (Padmasambhava). If you wish to increase might and strength, pray to Vajrapani. If you wish to increase great wisdom, pray to Manjushri. If you wish to increase all enjoyments, pray to Jambhala. If you wish to generate realization, pray to Vajradhara. Alternatively, Milarepa, Gampopa, etc. By meditating on whatever you wish, you will attain whatever siddhis you desire. For example, like a wish-fulfilling jewel, precious and incomparable. Therefore, the lama is a precious Buddha. Your own lama is none other than the Buddha, and there is no difference between him and any sentient being. If you are certain that your lama is the actual Buddha, then all the empowerments, transmissions, and instructions you receive are no different from receiving them from the actual Buddha. By doing this, the lineage becomes extremely powerful, and it is impossible for blessings not to arise; this is the key instruction. To regard the lama, who is the Buddha, as an ordinary person, and to count the lineage as near or far, I confess. The meaning of what Lingje Repa said: The mind is the nature of reality, one with all Buddhas. Speech is the source of all Dharma. The body is complete in the essence of the Sangha. Therefore, the Three Jewels are also gathered in the lama. Therefore, it is said that the lama is the root of the Three Jewels. All vidyadharas and accomplished ones are the body of the lama. All yidams and mandala deities are the speech of the lama. All dakinis and Dharma protectors are the mind of the lama. Wealth deities and treasure owners are the qualities of the lama. Dakinis and protectors are the activity of the lama. Therefore, the lama is the embodiment of all Buddhas. This meaning is extensively explained in the Lamdre (Path and Result) and other teachings. All secret mantras, knowledge mantras, and dharani mantras cannot be practiced without a lama. Therefore, the lama is the very essence of Vajradhara. Therefore, the root lama is said to be more important than the Buddhas of hundreds of thousands of eons. Therefore, it is said that disobeying the lama's command, which is in accordance with the Dharma, is a greater offense than killing all sentient beings in the three realms. If one acts according to the command, the benefits are great. Naropa, having been a great scholar and pandita, and having practiced the sadhana of Hevajra and other yidams, did not generate realization or attain the five siddhis. By serving Tilopa for twelve years according to his command, he attained accomplishment without needing to practice. Naropa, through devotion to the lineage and the guru's instructions, generated the realization of Mahamudra through devotion alone. In short, one should pray.
