To abide in equanimity within the expanse of emptiness, the Great Seal, is the accumulation of wisdom. Practice this by dividing it into six or four sessions. Moreover, it is not like offering the body by separating matter and consciousness as in the Chöd practice. Nor is it visualizing those bodies as non-existent and then transforming them into the four continents and Mount Meru to offer. What is it then? The external world, all the four continents and Mount Meru, are completely present within one's own body. Because of the key point that they exist, the four continents and Mount Meru, etc., appear externally. Therefore, by offering the internal world, i.e., everything that contains and is contained, the external is also offered along the way. For example, if one offers the image that appears inside a mirror, it is like offering the image that appears inside the mirror, one should understand this meaning. As it is said in the King of Tantras, Padma Zabba, "Offer mandalas and offerings, and whatever actions of the body one can do." And as it is said in the scriptures, "By offering this body of mine." These are the meanings of what is said. These preliminary practices, for those with sharp focus, should be practiced completely each day, and the main practice of channels and winds should also be practiced. Because Samadhi is perfected on the channels, it is difficult for beginners to grasp these objects. Even if one does only what one remembers, the merit is great, but the qualities of the signs of the path cannot arise. Therefore, by practicing each essential point completely in order, the qualities will arise in order, and the meaning of "guidance" will also be completely fulfilled. Then, at the time of the main practice, if one has not practiced the preliminaries, it is like not climbing the ladder of accumulation, but jumping from the roof, and nothing will come of it except falling to the ground. Like climbing the ladder step by step, one is easily liberated. Do not be annoyed by the many preliminaries, practice each one separately and steadfastly. Three days, the fourth Dharma session. Then, the Guru Yoga for the entry of blessings. In general, the Upadhyaya who has received the vows of a lay follower, the Khenpo and Acharya who have received the vows of a novice monk, etc., these five Lamas of the Vinaya tradition, one should have the concept of a father towards the Khenpo. Although it is only said to be an object of love and respect, in the customs of other traditions, the one who initially gives empowerment and introduces one to the door of Dharma is very kind. The one who receives the tonsure is considered the root Guru. For that one, the custom of generating faith and devotion through the door of lineage exists. The one who gives the vows of the Bodhisattva is good.

Since he is a relied-upon spiritual friend, it is only said that he should be treated with respect. Nowadays, it seems that those who have taken the Pratimoksha vows are not well-known. The mantra vows are given by someone who bestows the complete four empowerments. In the secret mantra tradition, it is said, "Do not regard the guru and the yidam deity as different." Thus, the guru and the yidam are said to be inseparable. According to the general tradition of the teachings, if one receives all three vows—Pratimoksha, Bodhisattva, and mantra—from one guru, that guru is called a "three-vow vajra holder." In the mantra tradition, if one has received empowerment, explanation of the tantras, and instruction, one is a "three-vow vajra holder." Which of these three is most important? The Sakya school and others say that empowerment is most important. In the Kagyu school, empowerment is the door to enter secret mantra, the tantras are the explanation, and one takes as one's root guru the one through whom one's own mind is introduced to the profound secret mantra, and through whom one gains experience and realization. It is not that the more teachings or transmissions one receives, the better, but rather, one takes as one's root guru the one through whom one gains the supreme realization of mahamudra. Even if one has not actually met them, if one hears their name and an unquestioning, irresistible faith arises, then if one prays to them single-mindedly, realization will arise. Just as Dakpo, Dusum Khyenpa, and Godtsangpa, who had not met their gurus, gained realization through prayer, that guru becomes one's root guru. This is the promise. Because of that key point, even if I give instruction, I do not have the power to bestow supreme accomplishment in one lifetime. Therefore, Padmasambhava or the great accomplished Karma Pakshi seem to be the root of this Dharma lineage, so pray to these two root gurus. In particular, all the gurus from whom you have received the kindness of hearing, contemplation, and meditation in this life should be gathered into the root guru and meditated upon—this is the instruction. Then, instantly visualize yourself in the state of completion, and as soon as you recite the six-syllable mantra, visualize Avalokiteshvara Gyalwa Gyatso as a solitary male form. Above your crown, in the space about a cubit high, on a lotus and moon seat, is the Great Compassionate One, Gyalwa Gyatso, in union with his consort, inseparable from the root guru, the great accomplished Karma Pakshi. Above that, visualize Khenpo Lungrik Nyima, and above that, visualize Gyalwang Chöying Dorje.
