Because it appears in various ways, one practices the incarnate body through self-arising and self-liberation. Because of practicing this, the three bodies of the fully realized Buddha will appear in oneself. Practice in this way! After saying this, King Songtsen Gampo instructed his father, saying: The view of Great Compassion is, Self-born and self-arising is the supreme of views. The nature of mind, emptiness, is naturally present from the beginning. Because it arises in oneself, one sees it as emptiness. There is nothing superior to that view. The meditation of Great Compassion is, Self-born and self-illuminating is the supreme of meditation. From the state of self-born emptiness, Self-illumination abides without grasping. There is nothing superior to that meditation. The conduct of Great Compassion is, Self-arising and self-liberating is the supreme of conduct. Whatever arises, be it the five poisons of conceptual thought, Do not follow after them, leave them in their own place. There is nothing superior to that conduct. So it was said. In the commentary on Great Compassion, 'The Jewel Ornament,' composed by the incarnate king, it says: In short, the mind is what holds the appearances of the six aggregates of sense faculties and their objects, so appearances are recognized as mind. Because the mind has no substance or characteristics, no form or color, the mind is recognized as emptiness. Appearances and emptiness are recognized as self-arising and self-liberating. So it says. And, Whatever subtle or gross thoughts arise, do not transform them, do not modify them, do not stop them, but release them and do not follow after them, but leave them in their own clear emptiness. Like a bubble dissolving into water, or snow falling into a lake, or sunlight falling on mist, or clouds dissolving into the sky, the arising of thoughts also arises from the mind. Dissolving also dissolves into the mind. Cleansing also cleanses in the state of emptiness of the mind, and is recognized. So it says. The five poisons are emptiness, so do not follow after ordinary afflictions. Arising also arises from the state of emptiness, and liberation also liberates from the state of emptiness. Without abandoning, therefore without stopping, it is self-arising. Without abiding, therefore without trace, it is liberated into emptiness. So it says. If that view is wrong, there is nothing, the essence of mind exists in emptiness, and is separated from the extremes of existence and non-existence, permanence and annihilation, is and is not, utterly without anything, that which is beyond the realm of knowledge and expression. This is the Great Compassion view, free from extremes, recognized as without support. So it says. What is the essence of meditation? The nature of mind is emptiness. That mind, whose essence is emptiness, is not established anywhere, therefore it abides in a state of clear emptiness.

Uninterruptedly, it remains clear and transparent. The essence of emptiness and clarity abides without being grasped by anything. If that is reversed, and one experiences it in one's own continuum, then the meditation of Great Compassion is introduced as clear and without grasping. Thus it is said. What is the nature of conduct? It is that one's own awareness recognizes itself. Where does it recognize? It recognizes awareness in emptiness. Whatever awareness arises, it is self-display emptiness. Whatever activity is uninterrupted, one does not grasp at it as that alone. At all times, walking, standing, lying down, sitting, no matter how one acts, one does not stray from the indivisibility of awareness and emptiness. That is the conduct of Great Compassion, introduced as spontaneously arising, uninterrupted, self-arising, and self-liberating. Thus it is said. Similarly, the oral tradition of the great accomplished Mitra Joki, from the teaching series of Chenrezig, says: The nature of mind is free from the three—arising, abiding, and ceasing. Its essence is emptiness by its very nature, like the expanse of space. That very nature is luminous, appearing as anything in the play of unceasing awareness, and all appearances are without arising, without abiding, without ceasing, and of equal taste. Essence is emptiness, nature is clarity, and appearance is unceasing awareness, appearing as many things, and appearances are indivisible, beyond intellect, like space. The three—clarity, awareness, and emptiness—abide without beginning or end. That is just how it is. Thus it is said. One should practice the union of calm abiding and insight. Because the mind is free from the three—arising, abiding, and ceasing—remaining in the state of emptiness and clarity indivisible, like space, is calm abiding. Seeing and knowing its nature is insight. Thus it is said. Furthermore, mind itself is Chenrezig. The eyes of Great Compassion see all beings without obstruction, that is Chenrezig. Beyond intellect, free from beginning and end, with the eyes of omniscience, seeing all phenomena like reflections, unmixed and self-luminous, that is Chenrezig. With the eyes of self-aware wisdom, seeing the meaning of the unborn nature of phenomena, that is Chenrezig. With the pure eyes in the realm of grasping and grasper, seeing the mind itself, free from elaboration and luminous, that is Chenrezig. Thus it is said. Orgyen Rinpoche said: Great Compassion is the key point of the most secret and supreme completion stage. On the nature of the true and correct view, afflictions
