The first is great joy. Because the body is forever without stain, the second is stainless. Because light radiates from the body of the deity, the third is this radiant one. Because the light opens the minds of sentient beings, the fourth ground is radiant. Because it is difficult to cultivate one-pointed focus, it is manifested through half of wisdom. Because the deity is meditated upon for the sake of sentient beings, the seventh is going far. Because doubt and duality are not generated, the eighth is the immovable ground. All sentient beings are ripened, and there is no thought of impurity in oneself, the ninth is good wisdom. The clouds of compassion pervade beings, the tenth is this cloud of dharma. Thus, in the Lotus King Tantra it is said: Pure, vast, and knowing all. As it is said, remembering that meditating on the body of the deity is the nature of the ten grounds is pure mindfulness. As for firm pride, in the Lotus King Tantra it is said: Clearly visualize your own body as a deity, and meditate on a slight amount of pride. Thus, as for subduing, one should abide in the four great prides. Thus it is said, one should ascertain oneself as the body of the deity and generate pride. Clarity of appearance, pure mindfulness, and firm pride are all necessary, but firm pride is essential. The wise and accomplished ones of the past also considered firm pride to be important, but the essential meaning of the generation stage is to reverse ordinary appearances and generate the appearance of the deity, so if pride is not firm, ordinary appearances cannot be reversed. And power is also often seen to arise from firm pride alone. Thus, the purpose and benefit of meditating on the body of the deity are twofold: common and uncommon. Firstly, in general, the benefit of meditating on the yidam deity is stated in the Great Tantra of the Vajra Tent: Whatever all the Buddhas have meditated upon, even if enlightenment is not definitely attained, the position of the wheel-turning king of that, in that place one will be born and be born, or become the lord of the earth, manifestly go to a pure place, the intelligent one will be born in the joyful realm of Tushita, the blissful city of the sky, whatever is accomplished in this very life, what need is there to speak of the Buddha in that? It is the greatest among the three realms, there is no difference between death and joy, thus renowned are Indra and Brahma, all-pervading, and fire and wind, the desire deity and the skull.
