The son of Apa, Thousand-Spoked Wheel, offered food, and after King Embodied Heart passed away, his daughter Lamp of Light offered food, and after King Ajatasatru passed away, his nephew Sariputra offered food, and Moggallana's son dedicated the alms food to the Three Jewels, thereby liberating his mother from the preta realm, etc. The offering of food is like this: By visualizing the deceased as a deity, obstacles and hindrances cannot harm them; otherwise, they will be robbed by flesh-eating demons, as heard from the oral tradition of the master. If empowerment has been given previously, the deity has already been generated, so that is sufficient, and the food with good color and shape, this comes from the Indian Sanskrit version of the "Manjushri Source of Qualities Ritual," so it is arranged here. All the desirable qualities of the ten directions and three times are offered to the deceased, inseparable from Vajrasattva, and it is said that until enlightenment is attained, there is an auspicious connection for enjoying perfect abundance. Temporarily, in the bardo state, one will also obtain perfect enjoyment, and other excellent (situations) are also connected with enjoyment. The Vajra Destroyer Tantra, etc., say that (the deceased) is the same, which means: the substitute image of the deceased, grasps the form of the deceased, becomes a protector for the living, and combines with the local deity. If it is worshipped, the living will be auspicious, and there will be no benefit or harm to the deceased. The Bon tradition's tombs involve burying various valuables with the corpse and worshipping them at specific times. In that place, or in the diviner's experience or dreams, the image of the deceased will say whether they have received food, etc. Those valuables cannot be taken by others, and if (the tomb) is worshipped, it will become inauspicious. This is not the consciousness of the deceased, but the work of black-sided spirits such as gandharvas and pisacas. Even if worshipped in that way, there is no benefit to the deceased. In the sutra "How Transference Occurs," it says: Please, Bhagavan, if that is the case, then for the transferred one, is there any meaning in offering food, drink, vehicles, clothing, and ornaments from here to help them? The Bhagavan replied: Great King, for the transferred one, whatever ripening of karma they experience, whatever different species they are born into, if one gives with various virtues from meritorious deeds unmixed with evil, ultimately...

Also, nobility and liberation can arise. If, for someone who has taken rebirth, virtues are given instead of merits, then that rebirth will gain wealth, have a good harvest, increase the enjoyment of desirable things, and have the benefit of being offered to and respected by all other beings. If the deceased has not taken rebirth but exists in other realms, then it is not eating, drinking, riding, wearing ornaments, and being a master. Great worldly kings, whoever they see, or dream of in the dreams of parents, etc., will say, 'The food and drink offered to the deceased are enough, they have ridden the mount, put on clothes, and worn ornaments.' Thus it appears, or they say, 'The food and drink are not enough, there is no mount, no clothes are worn, no ornaments are worn.' Those who say this will cause the gandharvas to approach the mind of death, and non-humans will cause it to appear that way.' Thus it is said. Therefore, in places where the Dharma has not flourished, offering tombs, and the Bon tradition of tying arrow shafts to birds, and offering paternal and maternal relatives, etc., are of no benefit to the deceased. The deceased appears as a deity, offering desirable things, temporarily like you are attached to a small child, attached to desirable foods, thereby eliminating the obstacle of not going to the pure land, and you must understand the difference between arranging the dependent arising of having enjoyment in other lifetimes. If one has already taken rebirth in hell, hungry ghosts, etc., one can obtain food, and even if one has been reborn as a human or animal, etc., it will become a dependent arising for increasing enjoyment, which can be proven by those previous scriptures. Here some say that if the consciousness is transferred and not burned, there will be the sin of burning the deity. If so, then 'live one' etc. is meaningless, and also at the time of the fire offering it will become burning the deity, and if there is no consciousness, the five aggregates will not be complete, and also for the corpse it is necessary to summon the consciousness. Because obscurations are connected with consciousness, the words of lighting the fire come from the 'Manjushri Source of Qualities Ritual' and the 'Black Wrathful One Corpse Burning Ritual', burning the impure parts of the aggregates, realms, and sources, and contemplating becoming the body of the Bhagavan Vajrasattva, these words are easy to understand. Burning the aggregates, realms, and sources of obscurations of the deceased.
