Already self-manifest. From the very beginning, it is self-nature. Like this, the characteristic of that essence is, in the 'Self-Arisen Tantra' it says: It transcends the cause of both permanence and annihilation. Thus it is said. In the 'Self-Liberation Tantra' it says: The stains of the four extremes are naturally clear. Thus it is said. The essence of one's own awareness is clearly manifest, not produced by cause in the beginning, not destroyed by conditions in the middle, and although non-existent, the self-power of emptiness radiates in various ways; this alone is the essence of the lamp. The nature of the lamp is: Because there is no inherent existence in this essence of one's own awareness, it is emptiness. And what is called awareness refers to one's own mind. And the emptiness of direction is: Looking at this awareness of one's own, it does not abide in the east and is not established. Similarly, south, west, north, intermediate directions, above and below, there is no inherent existence established in what is called the four directions. The emptiness of shape is: When one's own mind looks at this awareness, it is not established as a round shape. It is not established as any shape such as square, crescent, or triangle. Because it is not seen, it is emptiness. Similarly, the emptiness of color is: In this present awareness of one's own mind, it does not abide in the nature of the color white. Red, yellow, blue, green, variegated, etc., no color is seen or established. Because it is not established, it is emptiness. Similarly, in this awareness of one's own mind, there is not even a hair's breadth of something that is established as a characteristic of a phenomenon, and because it is not seen, it is the emptiness of self-nature emptiness. In the 'Heart Sutra' it says: Those five aggregates, one should contemplate as being empty of self-nature. Thus it is said. In the 'Self-Arisen Tantra' it says: To realize the nature of reality, one should know it in a state of non-action. In this way, having realized the meaning of non-arising, one wishes to see with the view of the nature of reality. Thus it is said. In the 'Tantra Without Letters' it says: Because there is no view, it is easy to look now. In the meaning of the view, there is naturally no 'this'. It is not that there is that, abide in that state. Thus it is said. In 'Naked Awareness' it says: Do not cut off before and after, abandon past concepts. Do not welcome after and before, cut the thread of the mind. Now without grasping, rest in the state of space. Because there is nothing to meditate on, do not meditate on anything. Without distraction

As it is said, "Rely on unwavering mindfulness, gaze intently at the state of no meditation, no distraction. The self-aware consciousness, self-illuminating and clear, the moment it arises is called enlightenment." Do not fixate on this in your mind as meditation. Do not engage in past or future thoughts. Do not hope for meditation to arise, nor doubt that it will not. Do not question whether this is meditation or not. Keep the body straight and relaxed, and let the mind look at the mind and abide. Even though there is nothing to see in terms of form, color, or objects, it is not an empty void. There is something to be known and experienced in the realm of the mind, which is called like a mute person chewing sugar cane. There is something to see in one's own mind, but it cannot be expressed in words, so it is called inexpressible, unthinkable, and unutterable. Because it has no form, color, or objects, it is called emptiness. If you know it, it is the best of knowledge, so it is called Prajnaparamita. The mind is free from the extremes of existence and non-existence, so it is called the Great Madhyamaka. All of samsara and nirvana are liberated from it, so it is called Mahamudra. All dharmas are included in it, so it is called Dzogchen. It is inherently present within oneself, so it is called co-emergent wisdom. In the direct seeing of awareness, it is said: Emaho! What is called mind is a flickering, shimmering awareness, but in reality, there is nothing at all. Yet, all kinds of samsara, nirvana, suffering, and happiness arise. Desires arise like the eleven vehicles. Names are assigned separately, beyond comprehension. Some call it mind-essence, mind-essence. Some non-Buddhists call it self. The Shravakas say there is no self of a person. The Mind-Only school names it mind. Some name it Madhyamaka. Some call it Prajnaparamita. Some name it Tathagatagarbha. Some name it Mahamudra. Some name it ordinary awareness. Some name it the single bindu. Some name it the Dharmadhatu. Some name it the Alaya. After directly pointing out and recognizing this, upon the trace-free disappearance of past thoughts, at the moment when future thoughts have not yet arisen, at the time when the present naturally abides without contrivance, when one's own awareness is in its ordinary state, when one looks directly at oneself, even the act of looking cannot be found.
