In the Sutra of the Handful of Light, it says: "He, having abandoned desires, having abandoned unwholesome dharmas, with initial application and sustained application, dwells, having attained the first dhyana, which is born of abandonment, with joy and pleasure. He, with the cessation of initial application and sustained application, with inner purity, with singleness of mind, without initial application, without sustained application, dwells, having attained the second dhyana, which is born of concentration, with joy and pleasure. He, having abandoned attachment to joy, dwells in equanimity, with mindfulness and clear comprehension, experiencing pleasure with the body, and the noble ones say of him, 'Mindful, dwelling in pleasure, equanimity.' That is, having abandoned joy, he dwells, having attained the third dhyana. He, having abandoned pleasure, having abandoned suffering, and with the previous cessation of mental pleasure and mental displeasure, without pleasure, without suffering, dwells, having attained the fourth dhyana, which is purified by equanimity and mindfulness." Thus, in the two kinds of scriptures, mental pleasure ceases in the third dhyana, and pleasure ceases in the fourth dhyana, therefore mental pleasure and mental joy are abandoned from the previous (dhyana), the third dhyana. (Joy and pleasure are similar in feeling as pleasure, but joy pacifies the mind, and when it is pacified, if another ground is attained, then that kind of feeling is called pleasure.) Therefore, the pleasure of the first two dhyanas is extreme habituation, and mental pleasure is joy, and in the third, the very pacification of the mind is established as pleasure, so the Vaibhashikas assert. Some say that mental pleasure is mental joy, and the pleasure spoken of as a limb in dhyana is bodily pleasure, and that is the pleasure born of extreme habituation of the body, and in the fourth, they say that it is also abandoned. If asked, do the dhyanas of the nature of affliction also have those limbs spoken of earlier? The answer is that some say yes, and some say no. Thus, the first dhyana of the nature of affliction is not separated from the afflictions of that ground (and is in accordance with it), so there is no joy and pleasure born of abandonment. The second is defiled by the afflictions of that ground, so it is not extremely pure, like a body afflicted with disease, it cannot be pure. The third is of the nature of affliction.

Because of being completely ignorant and confused by ease, there is no mindfulness and awareness. (Because it is a virtuous majority ground, there is also no equanimity.) The fourth is because it is tainted by the afflictions of its ground, so there is no completely pure equanimity and mindfulness. Some sectarian holders say that the first and second meditations of the afflicted do not have extreme pliancy, and the third and fourth do not have formation equanimity, because those are afflicted, and extreme pliancy and equanimity are virtuous majority grounds. Therefore, joy is the joy born from being separated from desire, extreme inner purity is the cessation of investigation and analysis, and mindfulness and awareness are considered to be merely not forgetting the object and wisdom, so it is believed that even the afflicted have them. Then, according to the previous view, is there or is there not (the second dhyana's) extreme pliancy and (the third dhyana's) equanimity? Some say that those are virtuous, so even though they are not directly said to be non-existent, they are established as non-existent. Some say that those are not said to be non-existent, so they exist (the second dhyana's extreme pliancy and the third dhyana's equanimity, some think that those two are virtuous, so they do not exist, while some think that they are not said to be non-existent, so they exist). Furthermore, the Blessed One said in the Middle Length Discourses that the first three meditations are all with movement because they are with faults, so the fourth meditation is without movement, because it is liberated from the eight faults of the lower ground. The eight faults are the two of investigation and analysis, and the two of breathing in and arising, and pleasure, and suffering encompassed by etc., and the four of pleasant and unpleasant, totaling eight. Others say that the first meditation is moved by investigation and analysis, the second by joy, and the third by pleasure, so they are with faults, while the fourth is separated from those, so it is unmoving. As it says in the Luhita Sutra: The fourth meditation is like a windless lamp that is not moved by the wind, so it is said by using the windless lamp as an example. Therefore, they say so. Then, if it is said that the first two have pleasantness, the third has pleasure, and the fourth has only equanimity, then what is the reason that meditative absorption first dhyana
