First, explaining the formless concentrations. First, explaining the formless concentrations. Firstly, it also has seven aspects: essence, classification, division of limbs, method of attainment, qualities, proximity, and classification of samadhi. Firstly, although the formless realms also serve as a basis for qualities, they are not the basis for all qualities. Concentrations, however, are the basis for all qualities (according to the order of arising). The concentrations that are first explained, in short, are of two types: fruit-arising and cause-equanimity. (The difference between these two, some Tibetans say: that which manifests only in its own ground is the fruit; that which manifests in a lower ground is the cause; that which is only equipoise is the cause; that which is both is the fruit; that which is only virtuous is the cause; that which is both virtuous and indeterminate is the fruit; that which is only meditation-born is the cause; that which is now also hearing-born and naturally born is the fruit; that which continues uninterruptedly as long as life lasts is the fruit; that which is occasional is the cause; that which has proximity is the cause; that which is only the main practice is the fruit; that which, as a basis for the lower, can also give rise to the samadhi of the higher is the cause; its fruit, which has the aggregates and vessel of the higher, is the fruit.) Each of these, in turn, is extensively classified from the perspective of the ground, with four types each from the first to the fourth concentration. Among them, the fruit, the concentrations that arise in the first concentration and so on, exist separately in the third place. The concentration ground is the third ground. The fourth ground is the eighth ground. Thus, in detail, it has already been explained earlier. All the concentrations of cause-equanimity are primarily of the nature of samadhi. The characteristic nature of all samadhi is also one-pointedness, therefore, in order to include afflicted (and wavering virtue) and unlabelled indeterminate one-pointed minds, it is a virtuous one-pointed mind, that is, a mental factor that makes the mind focus on one object, and not just the mind focusing on one object alone. If it is together with its retinue of followers, then it also has any of the form concentrations' stainless vows, therefore it is the nature of the five aggregates. All samadhi and associated things

The commentators say that 'one-pointed' means that the mind is focused on one thing, because that is the main thing. (The teacher says) If all minds are momentary, so there is no room for the object to change, then how are they not one-pointed? Is it pointless to examine the (distinguishing characteristic) samadhi (other meaning) that makes them one-pointed? It is not so, the mind of the first moment is not necessary, but the mind of the second moment (the first object or) through that samadhi, it does not stray from the object, so it is meaningful. (If so) Then the first mind is in accordance with samadhi, so samadhi will become meaningless (i.e. it will not do its job). And, if the samadhi of the first moment ceases in the second moment, then it will be contradictory to apply the action to the second. If it does not cease, then it will not be contemporaneous with the previous mind. Furthermore, for whatever reason, such as the non-fading of memory, the mind should be able to be one-pointed for the same reason that samadhi is considered one-pointed, then there is no need to give samadhi another meaning as the cause of it. If it is not able, then the same is true for samadhi. Furthermore, samadhi is a multi-ground of mind, so all minds will be susceptible to being one-pointed. It will not be so, the mind is one-pointed when samadhi is powerful and in accordance. The mind is not one-pointed when it is weak and in accordance. The multi-ground of samadhi is not certain to be only virtue and is weak, so the Vaibhashikas believe. The Sautrantikas say that the one-pointedness of mind is samadhi, there is no samadhi other than mind. In the Sutra of the Door of Learning of the Collection of Paths, it is said: 'What is higher mind training? The four dhyanas.' And in the Sutra of the Tiger Bodhiputra and the Shravaka Vimoksha, it is said that the main basis of the complete purification of mind is the four dhyanas. Just as the training of morality and wisdom is only morality and wisdom, so the training of mind is also said to be only mind.
