Ro. Why is the meaning of sound called meditation? Because it supremely contemplates, it is called meditation, that is, when abiding, in order to truly know as it is, hence it is a term for the act of truly knowing. If contemplation is meditation, then would all samadhis (with afflictions, etc.) become meditation? It is not so, the samadhi of excellent contemplation is called meditation, just as the sun is called radiant. Excellent contemplation here also, because it possesses limbs, is like a chariot drawn by horses yoked together, referring to the spontaneous arising of the union of calm abiding and insight. Therefore, the sutra says, "Abiding happily in the present dharma, and the path is easy." Then, because there is no supreme contemplation, would afflictions not become meditation? To that, there is also wrong ascertainment of contemplation, it is only similar to it, hence it is called that, like a rotten seed. (There is unwholesome meditation.) The Blessed One also said in the Brahma Net Sutra, "Unwholesome meditation arises from the five obscurations, not understanding liberation, and being obstructed by these, they cultivate, not speaking praise of meditation that should not be praised." Then, what are the first dhyana and so on like? The first dhyana is, like smoke pervading the ground with fire, because it acts together, there can be no joy with investigation without conception, therefore it is the one-pointedness of virtue that corresponds to investigation and the conception, joy, and happiness it represents. If that is the case, because of investigating together, thinking can also understand investigation, why not say it has thinking, joy, and happiness? When saying abandoning five and five limbs, it is to avoid the fault of excellent meditation also becoming the second dhyana. The remaining three dhyanas are, successively abandoning the previous limb, abandoning investigation and conception and having joy, abandoning investigation, conception, and joy and having happiness, and the one-pointedness of virtue of form that abandons investigation, conception, joy, and happiness. Just as all the dhyanas are both the production of fruit and the causal absorption, and each has four kinds,

Even the formless realms have two and four types. Among them, the formless realm born from fruition has no location in the formless realm. The explanation of the four types arising from birth has already been given. The formless realm of causal absorption is also absorption that is detached from desire for form, being a virtuous one-pointed concentration. The formless realm that follows, if accompanied by retinue, consists of the four aggregates. The distinction between the four is that by whatever path the fourth dhyana and so forth are separated from the lower grounds, that is, what is born from the proximate uninterrupted path that distinguishes and separates from desire, is, in order, the sphere of infinite space and so forth. (These uninterrupted paths not only overcome the lower grounds, but also transcend the object of focus, because they necessarily arise from the object of focus of the formless realm.) These formless realms also have four main states and the latter three proximate states, (the main state is:) in its own ground, there is no form, and it does not focus on the contaminated form of the lower ground (and the proximate state is that it focuses on its own lower ground, but does not transcend that ground), so it is called the destruction of the perception of form. In the proximate state of infinite space, it focuses on the form of the fourth dhyana and observes the gross and so on (therefore, whatever is focused on, the perception of that arises). Therefore, there is the perception of form. (Even in these, there are those who focus on what is not the domain of the six subsequent consciousnesses.) Here, the sect of the Mahasanghika's distinction that speaks of the supramundane, and the sect of the Sarvastivada's distinction, the Crimson Robe sect, and those revered by the many, believe that even in the formless realm there is some form. In the Sutra of Susima in the Madhyama Agama, it says: "Venerable Susima, whatever life and warmth are, these dharmas are mixed, they are not unmixed." Thus, it is said that life and warmth are mixed. Even in the formless realm there is life, and if there is life, there is warmth, and warmth is form. Similarly, Venerable Sariputra, for example, if two reeds are erected in the sky, relying on each other and standing, if someone takes away one, the other will fall, and if the other is taken away, the other will also fall. Venerable Sariputra, similarly, name and form are also mutually...
