The stainless absorption (med kyi) is obtained from not previously possessing those four causes, namely, by being free from desire. (That is, the path can be free from either contaminated or uncontaminated states. This refers only to the non-returner, as the first two fruits do not include the actual practice.) Those who already possess stainlessness obtain, through the power of application, from the exhaustion of knowledge up to the non-learner, including the actual practice. If the faculties change from dull to sharp, one obtains the learner and non-learner included by the sharp faculties. Those non-returning free from attachment, if they enter into certainty based on the preliminary dhyana actual practice, can also obtain the stainless dhyana actual practice, but if they enter into certainty relying solely on the gradual, irreversible process, they do not obtain the actual practice. Therefore, it is not certain that everyone obtains it, so it is not said to be obtained through entering into certainty. If a non-learner declines, they obtain the absorption actual practice included by the learner, but since they already possess the mere type of stainless absorption, there is no new attainment, so it is not said to be obtained through decline. (It would be too much to say that even children born in those realms possess stainlessness.) Therefore, there is no obtaining through being born into stainlessness. Third, contaminated absorption is obtained from not previously possessing it. For example, if one completely falls away from being free from desire from the first dhyana, one obtains the contaminated first dhyana absorption. Like this, it is obtained through complete falling away, and from the second dhyana upwards, except for the peak of existence, if the first dhyana arises first, one obtains the contaminated state of the first dhyana. Like this, there are two ways of obtaining by being born from a higher realm to a lower realm, but it is not obtained by being born from below to above or by being free from desire, because this is already possessed, so there is no obtaining through application and being free from desire. Fifth, explaining the distinguishing characteristics, then after what does the substance of absorption occur? After stainless dhyana and formless meditation, the virtues (contaminated) and stainless of the self-realm and (including) the two subsequent realms, i.e., between the three realms, and the virtues, contaminated and stainless, between the (self-realm and) the lower (two realms, i.e.,) three realms, arise. This is just a general explanation and is not always the case, because after the stainless first dhyana, the pure absorptions of the lower realm do not arise, and there is no stainless birth, and the birth of nothingness.

Moreover, in the aftermath of the stainless sphere, the higher stainless one does not arise. Therefore, in the aftermath of the stainless first dhyana, six arise: in the usual course, the stainless one of one's own realm arises; when rising from meditative absorption, the pure one of one's own realm arises; when engaging in absorption in accordance with the proper manner after mixing with the contaminated, the pure one of the second dhyana arises; when engaging in absorption in accordance with the proper manner without mixing with the contaminated, and at the time of the union of transcendence, when engaging in absorption in accordance with the proper manner without mixing, the stainless one of the second dhyana arises; when going to the third, which is a different realm after mixing, the actual transcendence produces the pure one of the third dhyana; when going to the third without mixing, the stainless one of the third proximity arises. The fourth and above, both above and below, cannot arise because they are too distant; the desire realm cannot produce the stainless, and even if only the virtue of the desire realm arises, it is not the meditative absorption of the realm. In the aftermath of the stainless second dhyana, eight arise: in the usual course, and when rising from it, the stainless and pure ones of one's own realm arise in order; when engaging in absorption in accordance with the proper manner without mixing, the stainless one of the third dhyana arises; when engaging in absorption in accordance with the proper manner after mixing, the pure one of the third dhyana arises; when going to the third without mixing, the stainless one of the fourth proximity arises, and if mixing, the actual transcendence produces the pure one of the fourth; when engaging in absorption not in accordance with the proper manner, if not mixing, the stainless one of the first arises, and if mixing, the pure one also arises. Similarly, in the aftermath of the stainless third dhyana, ten arise: the two of one's own realm, the two of the fourth, the two of the sphere of infinite space, the two of the second dhyana, and when going to the third not in accordance with the proper manner, the two of the first dhyana also arise. Similarly, it should be understood that ten each arise in the aftermath of the fourth dhyana and the sphere of infinite space, as appropriate. In the aftermath of the stainless sphere of infinite consciousness, nine arise: the two of one's own realm, when engaging in absorption in accordance with the proper manner, the two of the sphere of nothingness, and when going to a different realm in accordance with the proper manner,
