So, do the feelings present in the first and second dhyanas—the feeling of pleasure, and the happiness present in the third dhyana, and the equanimity present in the fourth dhyana—do these also exist when the fruit arises? Answer: In the fourth dhyana, it is so, but in the other dhyanas, it is not so. Among the four dhyanas of rebirth, the first dhyana has the mental pleasure of the mind-basis, and the happiness corresponding to the three consciousnesses of eye, ear, and body, and the equanimity of all four consciousnesses. In the second dhyana, since there are no other consciousnesses, there is only the equanimity and pleasure of the mind-basis. In the third dhyana, there is the mental happiness and equanimity of the mind-basis. In the fourth dhyana, there is only the feeling of equanimity of the mind-basis. If there are no three consciousnesses such as eye-consciousness and no investigation in the second dhyana and so on, then how does the grasping of form, sound, and touch, and the physical and verbal expressions arise? Answer: Those born in the second dhyana and so on do not lack those consciousnesses such as eye-consciousness, but they are not their own territory either. Then what is it like? In the three higher dhyana realms such as the second dhyana, the three consciousnesses of body, eye, and ear, and the physical and verbal expressions, necessarily rely on investigation to initiate. Since there is no investigation in one's own realm, the investigation that initiates these actions belongs to the realm of the first dhyana. For example, when those in higher realms want to emanate a lower realm emanation, the emanation mind of the lower realm manifests on the basis of the higher realm. This is the view of the Vaibhashikas. (Therefore, it is not contained by it, but exists on that basis. And those dharmas initiated by it are also of the first dhyana and are non-obscured and unspecified, they say.) That is, the consciousnesses such as eye-consciousness and the investigation that manifest in the higher realm are non-obscured and unspecified, because they are unnecessary inferior things, so they are not virtuous. Or, if the virtue of the first dhyana has resultant fruit, then the resultant fruit of the first dhyana will not pursue the second dhyana and so on, therefore it will not strive to manifest the virtuous mind that is its cause. The king's son explains it this way. Since it is free from desire from the lower realm (and has abandoned those of the first dhyana), it is also not afflicted, just like the mind of an emanation.

Those not specifically mentioned (sight, hearing, etc.) are inferior, but are revealed because they are needed, but not out of respect. For example, it is believed that all three aggregates of consciousness are present in the latter three dhyanas. Fourth, there are three ways to attain, the first being the pure one, which is attained through four ways: detachment from desire from the lower realms, being born from the higher to the lower realms, through application, and through falling away from detachment. Among these, those who were never previously associated with purity are those who are detached from desire from the lower realms, or those who are born from the higher realms to the lower realms, except for the peak of existence, can attain three, except for the purity of the decisive part. Because there is no higher realm than the peak of existence, and when one is born there from the lower realms (because it is the cause of absorption), it is already possessed, and there is no new attainment because of birth, so it can only be attained by detachment from desire from the lower realms, and cannot be attained by birth. (That which is attained by detachment from desire is only the decisive part.) This is also in terms of not having it previously, for the pure one and the one who already possesses it, the pure one of dhyana corresponding to the decisive part, cannot be attained by detachment and birth, but is attained by application. If one falls away from the abiding part, one attains the corresponding part of falling away; for example, if one falls away from detachment from desire from the first dhyana, one attains the corresponding part of falling away from the first dhyana, and one can also attain it through falling away. Therefore, it is said in the scriptures: Does the pure one of dhyana attain by detachment from desire, and abandon by detachment from desire, and similarly, attain and abandon by complete falling away and birth? Answer: Yes, it is the part corresponding to the falling away of the first dhyana. That is attained by detachment from desire from the desire realm, and abandoned by detachment from desire from the Brahma world. It is attained by complete falling away from detachment from desire from the Brahma world, and abandoned by complete falling away from detachment from desire from the desire realm. One attains when born from the upper realm to the Brahma world, and abandons when born from there to the desire realm. The Brahma world is the first dhyana. Therefore, detachment from desire from the first dhyana abandons the corresponding part of falling away from the first dhyana, because it corresponds to the afflictions of the first dhyana, just like the afflictions of the first dhyana.
