When arising from absorption after entering samadhi, only the pure one of the peak of existence arises. This is because the activity there is weak, and there is no absence of outflows. If one enters samadhi improperly, then in the sphere of infinite space and the fourth dhyana, there are two pure ones and two without outflows from their respective grounds. After the sphere of nothingness, there arise the pure ones of one's own ground and the lower ground, the sphere of consciousness, and the sphere of infinite space, and two without outflows each. Also, only the pure one of the higher ground, the peak of existence, arises, making seven in total. That is, immediately following subsequent knowledge, one does not enter formless absorption, but immediately following Dharma knowledge, one does not enter formless absorption, because the formless does not focus on desire, while Dharma knowledge focuses on the support of desire and the suffering of desire, etc. The arising of pure ones and without outflows from the pure one of samadhi is also immediately following the pure one, with virtue in between the three above and below. As it is said, "arises," one should understand it as arising from the without outflows. However, there is this difference: from the pure one, in addition to those that arose earlier, especially when afflicted by the afflictions of samadhi (at the time or when experiencing), the afflictive dhyana of their respective grounds also arises, but in the immediate aftermath of the without outflows, no afflictions arise. From the afflictive samadhi, if it is grasped by mindfulness and memory, then at the time of arising, the pure one of one's own ground arises, and during continuation, the afflictive one of one's own ground arises. Not only that, but because one is afflicted by the afflictions of one's own ground, one becomes fond of the pure one of the lower ground, so when arising, one pure one (or virtue) of the lower ground also arises. If one thinks, "This dhyana is afflictive, therefore the lower one is better," and recognizes the fault of the afflictions of one's own ground and transfers to the lower ground, then it is an increase from virtue. But if one does not recognize it as afflictive, then how can one transfer from there to the virtue of the lower ground? When first entering samadhi, because the afflictive one of the higher ground thinks that the pure one of the lower ground is better, if the mind of the higher ground becomes afflictive, then immediately one wishes to abide in the pure one of the lower ground. Therefore, immediately following the afflictive one of the higher ground, the pure one of the lower ground arises, like this time.

It is like thinking, "I should wake up at that time" and falling asleep, one will wake up when one wants to wake up. In the aftermath of afflictions, the uncontaminated will not arise in any way in its own realm or lower realms. That is to say, in terms of the time of entering into absorption, pure beings, in the aftermath of afflictions, only generate afflictions of their own realm, and afflictions of other realms do not arise. However, at the time of death and transference, in the pure meditations of birth, because the merit of birth is not meditative equipoise, one also obtains the name of a pure meditator. Therefore, from the pure state of meditative absorption, the connecting mind of all those who are born in their own realm or above or below may arise with all kinds of afflictions. For example, like a first dhyana practitioner, the merit abides in what is obtained at birth, and it is possible to be born in all realms, including one's own, above, and below. Since it is said that "the existence of birth is afflicted," all sentient beings who are born are necessarily afflicted. Moreover, at the time of death and transference, from the afflicted state of meditative absorption, afflictions of one's own realm and lower realms arise, but afflictions of higher realms do not arise, so one is not born in a higher realm. Because one does not abandon the afflictions of the lower realms, one is not born in the higher realms, so it is contradictory to connect there with that. Then, in the aftermath of all pure meditative absorptions, do afflictions of one's own realm and higher and lower realms, as well as pure and uncontaminated meditative absorptions, arise? No, they do not. Except for the peak of existence, those pure meditative absorptions are in accordance with the declining aspect, and, gathered together, in accordance with the abiding aspect, and in accordance with the special aspect, and in accordance with the definitive aspect, there are four aspects. For the peak of existence, since there is no other realm above, there is no accordance with the special aspect, so there are three. (The definitive aspect in accordance with the path of seeing does not exist in the formless realms.) Those in accordance with the declining aspect, and so forth, are, in order, in accordance with the arising of afflictions, and (without increase or decrease) in accordance with one's own realm, and in accordance with the arising of the mind of the higher realm, and since the uncontaminated arises from that, they are in accordance with the arising of the uncontaminated path. That which is called "in accordance with" is merely tending towards the arising of that, but it is not actually arisen.
