If they are different, it is because the happiness of all three dhyanas is accomplished through bodily happiness. Then, how does body consciousness arise in equanimity, since the five sense consciousnesses are naturally distracted and look outward? If it does arise, wouldn't it lead to deterioration from samadhi and rising from abiding due to outward distraction and the arising of body consciousness? And since bodily happiness does not arise in equanimity, it is not appropriate as a limb of dhyana. Furthermore, since one enters into samadhi from the dhyana of the desire realm, which has a basis, whether contaminated or uncontaminated, and is the ground of dhyana, the body consciousness of the desire realm cannot sequentially grasp the tangible objects of form. Since tangible objects and body consciousness are the ground of form, the body sense of the desire realm cannot generate the body consciousness that grasps tangible objects while experiencing form. Moreover, since it is not permissible for a single aggregate to have both contaminated and uncontaminated limbs, wouldn't extremely refined tangible objects and body consciousness also become uncontaminated? No, there are no such faults. When one is in equanimity, what is called extremely refined tangible objects, arising from the distinctiveness of samadhi, makes the body light and the complexion pleasant, and the wind that accords with the feeling of happiness increases and pervades the body. Therefore, through its power, body consciousness, along with its concomitants, arises in accordance with the samadhi that focuses on extremely refined tangible objects. And since the body consciousness, along with its concomitants, that arises from samadhi arises within the body, it will not be distracted outward. And since it accords with samadhi, when it arises, it will not deteriorate from samadhi or rise up. In general, there is no pervasion that the body sense of the desire realm generates body consciousness that focuses on the tangible objects of form. However, here, through the power generated by samadhi, the body sense of the desire realm in equanimity is able to generate extremely refined body consciousness, along with its concomitants, that focuses on the extremely refined tangible objects of form. And precisely because of this, bodily happiness is also established as a limb of dhyana. The assertion that extremely refined tangible objects and body consciousness become uncontaminated is what is desired. As it is said in the Sutra of the Aggregate of the Path: "Extremely refined bodily pliancy is a limb of perfect enlightenment, and it will lead to manifest realization, complete enlightenment, and transcendence of suffering."

Because, whatever is extremely tamed body is a branch of perfect enlightenment, is manifest knowledge, is complete enlightenment, and is becoming nirvana, thus it is said that the extremely tamed body is a branch of enlightenment. If someone asks: Then in the Sutra of the Collection of Six Sense Bases, it says: "What are the defiled dharmas? How much is the eye, how much are the forms, and how much is the consciousness of the eye," and so on until "How much is the body, how much are the touchables, and how much is the consciousness of the body," all fifteen realms are said to be only defiled, is this contradictory? Answer: The example teacher says, that refers to other touchables and body consciousnesses other than the extremely tamed touchable and body consciousness, so there is no fault. The inner purity in the second dhyana branch is because the disturbance of the investigation and analysis of the first dhyana has ceased, and the first dhyana not only definitely emerges from desire, but also this (second dhyana) definitely emerges from the first dhyana's samadhi ground, so it is the faith of trusting in it. Here, a special person with fortune says that the state of mind, the cessation of investigation and analysis, is merely inner purity, and similarly, investigation and analysis and samadhi, etc., are not substances other than the mind, but are established on the state of mind. It is unreasonable to say this, because they are cause and effect, so they are different entities. Also, if it is thought that the first two dhyanas regard joy as happiness, it is unreasonable, because other schools think that joy is another mental event (only the mental ground), and happiness is the happiness that all three dhyanas have, so the happiness that all three dhyanas have is happiness other than joy. If you think so, then in the first two dhyanas, because they have not left attachment, they have not attained near peace, so only joy is happiness, the third dhyana is, because it has left attachment, so it is near peace, so it is only mental happiness, not mental pleasure, because it is definitely emerging from the dhyana branch, so in the Transformation Sutra, after proclaiming the third dhyana, it says: "Here, all the roots of this mental pleasure will cease," and "The fourth dhyana is the root of pleasure ceasing," and the branch of dhyana
