Therefore, by abandoning the opposing factors, such as desire, malice, and harm in the desire realm, the antidote branches are conception and analysis. Having abandoned the opposing factors of conception and analysis, one obtains the joy and happiness born of solitude, so the benefit branches are joy and happiness. Through the power of one-pointedness of mind, the aforementioned are accomplished, so the branch that is the basis for both is samadhi. The second dhyana has four branches: by abandoning the conception and analysis of the first dhyana, the antidote branch is inner clarity. The benefit and abiding or basis branches are as before, namely joy and the two, happiness and samadhi, which are encompassed by joy and so forth. The third dhyana has five branches: by abandoning the joy of the lower realm, the antidote branch is effortless joy, which has the characteristic of spontaneously accomplishing the object, equanimity of action, and the three, mindfulness that does not forget the cause of equanimity and non-forgetting awareness. The benefit and basis branches are, in order, happiness and the abiding of the mind, samadhi. It is said in the sutra of the collection of paths that abiding of mind is samadhi, as it says, "What is correct samadhi? It is that which abides in the mind and abides correctly." Therefore. The fourth end of all the dhyanas has four branches: by abandoning the happiness of the lower realm, the antidote branches are both completely purified of the eight faults of the lower realms, namely complete mindfulness and complete equanimity of action. The benefit and basis branches are, in order, the feeling of equanimity that is neither happiness nor suffering, and complete purification of samadhi. Thus, these are the eighteen branches of dhyana. (It is good to consider the antidote to these as the antidote of continuity.) From the Compendium of Determinations, the opposing factors of the first dhyana are the desire of the desire realm, malice, and the distinctions of harming, which are combined into one, as well as suffering, displeasure, corrupted morality, and the five of distraction. The opposing factors of the second dhyana are the desire of the first dhyana and the two, conception and analysis, combined into one.

I, are suffering, agitation, and incomplete samadhi, these five. The incompatible aspects of the third dhyana are the desire, mental pleasure, joy, and incomplete samadhi of the second dhyana, these four. The incompatible aspects of the fourth dhyana are exhalation and inhalation, the desire of the third dhyana, pleasure, striving for pleasure, and incomplete samadhi, these five. In terms of the limbs of the antidote, although the antidote for abandoning the five incompatible aspects of the first dhyana is mindfulness, awareness, and equanimity, these three, because they are manifested through investigation and analysis, they are not indicated by the names of these three, but rather investigation and analysis are shown as limbs of the antidote. Similarly, the antidote for abandoning the five incompatible aspects of the second dhyana is also mindfulness, awareness, and equanimity, these three, but because they are completely entangled by the near affliction of mental joy, they are not indicated by their own names, but rather by the pacification of the disturbance of investigation and analysis, they are indicated by the name of complete recovery from illness. Therefore, complete recovery from illness here is the nature of mindfulness, awareness, and equanimity. For the third dhyana, because it is free from the near affliction of mental joy, it is indicated only by the nature of equanimity, mindfulness, and awareness, these three. Therefore, in terms of the three limbs such as the antidote, these dhyanas are established as five limbs and four limbs. The difference of the fourth dhyana is that the first and second dhyanas have the difference of complete perfection of samadhi. The second and third dhyanas have the difference of complete perfection of benefit. The third and fourth dhyanas have the difference of complete purity and complete perfection. Thus it is said. Those eighteen are also only from the perspective of names, but in terms of substance, there are eleven, namely the five limbs of the first dhyana, the inner purity of the second dhyana, and the four of the third dhyana excluding samadhi, and the equanimity of feeling of the fourth dhyana. If investigation and analysis, mindfulness, volitional equanimity, mental pleasure, and equanimity of feeling each as a substance can become limbs, then how can the pleasure of the first two dhyanas become limbs of dhyana? Because those two grounds
