What is the reason why the first formless realm does not show limbs? Are there limbs in the formless realms like meditation? The answer is no. The commentary says, "Among these objects of equipoise, only the dhyanas have limbs, but the formless ones do not." The reason for this is stated in the Compendium of Topics: "In the formless realms, there is no establishment of limbs because of the single taste of quiescence." The teacher, the son of the king, also said the same. The meaning of this is that some say in the commentary of the teacher Gangpel that because of the single taste of quiescence, wherever there is a coarse movement, limbs are established there, but in the formless realm, because of the greater quiescence, the movement of mind and mental factors is weak, so it is impossible to establish limbs there. In those places where concentration is dominant, other mental factors are not important, so limbs are not established in the formless realm. Others say that wherever mental factors completely cease, limbs are established there. Thus, in the first dhyana, suffering and displeasure cease, and similarly, in the second, investigation and analysis cease, in the third, joy ceases, and in the fourth, pleasure ceases, but after that, no mental factors completely cease. Thus, the Dharma Treasury says that there are no limbs except for the four fundamental dhyanas. The Noble Liberation Section says that the formless realms have two limbs: equanimity and one-pointedness, and that the difference between the quiescence and non-quiescence of the mind increases like cloth woven from fine and coarse cotton threads. Brangti says that the four formless realms have four limbs each: mindfulness, awareness, equanimity, and concentration. The teacher Kamalashila says in the first chapter of the Stages of Meditation that although the near attainment of the first dhyana is not competent, it also has four limbs: feeling of equanimity, investigation, analysis, and one-pointedness. Second, the number is fixed. If other mental factors such as consciousness and contact also exist, why are only investigation and analysis established as limbs? There are two answers to this: the views of others and one's own views. First, some people

If someone says that those that exist in the former dhyana and are abandoned and discarded by the latter are said to be limbs; but like feeling, etc., although they exist in the former dhyana, they are not abandoned by the latter, so they are not said to be limbs. For example, the first dhyana has five limbs, abandoning the two of seeking and examining, and establishing them in the second; abandoning the two of seeking and examining of the first, and the joy of the second, and establishing them in the third; abandoning those three, and the happiness and four of the third, and saying that it is the fourth dhyana. If so, then samadhi will also become not a limb, if asked, because samadhi is the main thing of equanimity, so it is not the same. Or, only the five limbs of the first dhyana, etc., are established, because those limbs are very beneficial to the first dhyana, etc. If so, then the first dhyana will not establish seeking and examining as limbs, but will establish mindfulness and wisdom as limbs, because mindfulness abides near and knows correctly as it is, and sinking and excitement, etc., will not occur, because the two of seeking and examining are very beneficial to mindfulness and wisdom. Secondly, in the explanation it says: Some people argue like that, but the former teachers did not show all the realizations like that, so this should be examined. The authors of the Ṭīkā say that this should be examined by seeing the ground of the yogi, because the teacher there cites the basis for observation, so it should be explained in accordance with that. If so, then how does it arise from that? Like this, although there are other dharmas such as feeling in the dhyanas, only seeking and examining, etc., are established as limbs, because of the respective antidotes and benefits, and the limbs of the support or abode of those two. Therefore, the number should be determined by considering the freedom of those. Thirdly, determining the meaning of limb and that which has limbs, the Vaibhāṣikas say that samadhi is both dhyana and a limb of dhyana, while others are only limbs. They say that. The teacher thinks that although it is not a different thing from the limb, it is the generality and individuality of the collection, just like saying a four-limbed army. Secondly, regarding the meaning of the text, the first dhyana has five limbs
