(Because it does not possess the heavens) it is called difficult to generate the path. Therefore, for the first dhyana, there is only the essence that possesses both investigation and analysis, and the distinction of having only analysis without investigation. But for the second of mind and so on, there is no such distinction, so there is no distinction in the essence. The excellent dhyana, whatever is contaminated, if practiced, will be born in the Great Brahma, so it has the fruit of the Great Brahma. Therefore, love and so on are the cause of completion, so it is also called Brahma-vihara. Seventh, the classification of samadhi is also a summary of all samadhis, and the sutra says: There are three kinds of samadhi: samadhi with investigation and analysis, samadhi without investigation but only with analysis, and samadhi without investigation and without analysis. Among the three samadhis mentioned, the excellent samadhi is only the cessation of investigation, so it is samadhi with only analysis without investigation. Below the excellent samadhi, the essence of the first dhyana and the two of near attainment and non-interruption are samadhi with investigation. Above the excellent samadhi, from the near attainment of the second dhyana to the peak of existence, are samadhis without investigation and analysis that include those grounds. Also, the sutra says: There are three kinds of samadhi: emptiness, wishlessness, and signlessness. Among the three samadhis mentioned, the individual contemplation cessation with nirvana as the object is signless because it is free from the three or four characteristics (i.e., ten) of the five objects, male and female, and conditioned phenomena. (Here, the faculties are not mentioned as signs because the faculties are not as attractive as the objects.) The samadhi that focuses on it is the signless samadhi, which corresponds to the four aspects of cessation that pacify all signs. The samadhi of emptiness focuses on emptiness or selflessness, and corresponds to the aspect of entering the selflessness and emptiness of the truth of suffering. (This is also the antidote to the view of the perishable aggregate.) The samadhi of wishlessness focuses on conditioned phenomena that are not desirable objects, and has the aspect of aversion, and also with emptiness and selflessness.
