The manifestation of the first moment's eye consciousness, etc., is because they are unobscured and indeterminate, not because they are meditative stabilization and formless stabilization. Here, it is because their basis, namely thought, is appropriate. Alternatively, even if they are inferior, they are not in their own realm, because there is a need for views, etc., so it should be known that they manifest. Furthermore, what are the objects of these meditative stabilizations? Meditative stabilizations that are accompanied by craving and are similar to enjoying flavors only focus on the reality of the aggregates of existence with outflows of their respective realms. They do not focus on the lower realms because their own nature is afflicted and they are free from desire from the lower realms (afflicted). (If craving arises from focusing on that, then that would be considered not free from desire.) Because the craving of any realm increases only in that realm, the cravings of the upper and lower realms are completely separated, so they do not focus on the upper realms either. If it were not so, then that upper realm would not be established, because the different realms are not separated, just like other places in the same realm. Therefore, even if the other three sets of three places and the eight places are upside down, they are established as the same realm, as the king's son declared. They also do not focus on the uncontaminated, because if one seeks the uncontaminated, one will develop a desire for virtuous dharmas. The objects of meditative stabilization, virtue, purity, and the uncontaminated are all that exist as appropriate, because the mind is focused by focusing on any conditioned or unconditioned phenomenon. The approximation of the formless realm focuses on the contaminated of the lower realms, and the actual state also has afflictions, while the actual state of virtue focuses on the path of the dharma-knowing liberation and the cessation of the lower realms (purity realizes the upper realms, but not directly, but with the mind of meditative stabilization focusing on the objects of those two). Although they do not focus, the antidote to the contaminated of the uncontaminated lower realms, namely the path of subsequent knowledge liberation, and the truth of their own and upper realms are clearly focused, so they should be distinguished from those. Meditative stabilizations are universal observers, so the actual state also focuses on the contaminated of the lower realms, but the sphere of activity of the actual state of virtue, purity, and the uncontaminated of the formless realm is not the contaminated of the lower realms.

Because formless entities necessarily arise from their objects. The term 'focusing on the higher' refers to the manifestation of the mind of the noble ones in the peak of existence, devoid of anything, and it should be understood that it does not refer to everything. (It implicitly indicates that the path of no outflow in the lower realms is the object of knowledge of the higher realms, in accordance with the direction, that is, the way the nine grounds relate to each other.) Among these three, namely, meditative absorption, the formless realms, and the pure ones, the entities free from outflows eliminate the afflictions of their own ground and the higher grounds. (The pure ones do so) because the proximate attainment has already separated from desire. (The afflicted ones do not) because existence does not necessarily arise from existence, and therefore it is not the antidote to its own ground. Moreover, the afflicted ones of the higher ground are far superior to the pure ones of the lower ground (unable to overcome), because the inferior cannot eliminate the superior. Therefore, if even the entities of the pure ones do not eliminate the afflictions of the lower, their own, and the higher grounds, what need is there to mention the afflicted ones? The proximate attainment of meditative absorption and the formless realms of the higher grounds is the antidote to the lower and lower grounds, so not only can the outflow-free eliminate them, but also the (proximate attainment) pure ones can eliminate the afflictions, and this is how it should be connected. Sixth, explanation of the proximate attainment: So, how many proximate attainments are there? The actual states of absorption (there are eight), and for those eight, there are also eight proximate attainments, which are the practices by which one enters. Since there is no way to separate from afflictions in all of them, the path associated with craving cannot eliminate afflictions. However, these are the paths that lead to separation from desire, so they are not associated with the experience of self-nature, but only the pure ones arise without deliberate effort. And if one becomes disillusioned and separated from the lower ground, then they are associated with joy and happiness, so those must be guided with effort, hence they are manifest (because the afflicted ones are not the antidote to the lower ground. The latter seven are unclear, so there is no outflow-free. Because there are no afflicted ones in the meditative absorption and formless realms of equal cause, when one is born into those results, the consciousness at the moment of conception is connected by the afflicted ones, not having equally established their respective proximate attainments, thus it is established).
