(end.) It includes accumulation, and because it is not separated from the aversion to the lower realms, the feeling is neither happiness nor suffering, but is completely in accordance with the equanimity faculty alone. Or, because it must be strived to be straightened, it is in accordance with equanimity. Because it is not separated from the aversion to the lower realms, and it is the path of separation from desire, it is a purifier, not in accordance with a taster, it should be said. The venerable teacher Āryadeva said that for the mental activity of entering those eight fundamental absorptions, he explained seven each. Among them, by way of the lower realms having short lives and much suffering, etc., viewing them as coarse, etc.; by way of the upper realms being the opposite of that, viewing them as peaceful, etc., thereby knowing what should be abandoned and what should be attained, and for the sake of abandoning and attaining, fixing the mind, this is combined with hearing and thinking, the mental activity of distinguishing each characteristic. And, the combination of composing what should be abandoned and what should be attained, that is, focusing on the characteristics of peace and coarseness, transcending hearing and thinking, is the mental activity arising from aspiration. Also, abandoning the three great afflictions of the lower realms is the extremely solitary mental activity. And, increasing the joy of solitude, abandoning the three medium afflictions is the mental activity of gathering joy. Also, because the afflictions of the lower realms are separated from the cause of manifestation, in order to examine whether they are exhausted or not, mentally engaging with the characteristics of their arising, and placing the mind on not having pride in what has been attained, this is the mental activity of investigation. Having investigated in this way, recognizing that there are three small afflictions, thereby abandoning the three small afflictions, and becoming the fundamental cause of the fundamental, is the mental activity of ultimate combination. Among these, the first six are combination, and the seventh is the fundamental. Thus, the upper school says that through the worldly proximate concentration of the upper realm, all nine cultivations to be abandoned of the lower realm are abandoned, this is the view of the upper school, not the view of the Vaibhāṣikas. If that were the case, then whoever has not obtained the fundamental of meditation, having obtained the path of seeing by relying on the uninterrupted path, because of having obtained the initial proximate concentration, it would follow that all cultivations to be abandoned of the desire realm would be abandoned. If the cultivations to be abandoned are not abandoned, then in the commentary called "entering the stream of the first fruit," that path of seeing with attachment

Because it is said that not abandoning even one of the objects to be abandoned by meditation in the three realms means possessing all bondages. Among those eight access meditations, the first, the unobstructed access meditation of the first dhyana, is not only pure but also noble and without outflows. (This is because clarity overcomes the afflictions of the three realms below itself.) Those who have not attained the actual state of dhyana arise by relying on the path that transcends the world. The other access meditations rely on the actual state of the lower realms, so they do not rely on the path that transcends the world. Among the other access meditations, there are both those in equipoise and those not in equipoise. The first is only purely virtuous, while the second, in the Tika, it says that the access meditation of all eight formless dhyanas is afflicted because it is not in equipoise, so it is a connection. This is an established tenet because it is also a connecting mind, so it is also afflicted. The commentary says: 'The mind of access meditation is afflicted when it connects, but in equipoise, the very nature of being afflicted is refuted.' (It is said that there is also an absorption of tasting.) Some former teachers (like Bhadanta) hold that the unobstructed access meditation of the first dhyana has three qualities: purity, outflowlessness, and tasting, because of its clarity. The teacher Bhadanta says that the unobstructed is close to the actual state. It is said that there is also an absorption of tasting. (If one also considers a connecting mind here, then that is the case.) Then, sometimes it is called access meditation, and sometimes it is called special dhyana. Are they the same or different? They are different. Access meditation is the path of separation from desire, while the actual state of the first dhyana itself is special because it is separated from conceptualization, so that which is without conceptualization but with discernment is special dhyana. That is (because it is not the result path but already separated, so if one distinguishes it), it has all three aspects: purity, outflowlessness, and tasting. (The unobstructed) is to be generated through effort, so the feeling is neither pleasure nor pain, but is associated only with equanimity. Therefore (
