Furthermore, in the formless realm, neither investigation and joy, nor the three branches of morality exist. This is because investigation has been abandoned and feeling is neutral. Also, there is no physical or verbal action in those realms. The other thirty-two exist. Twenty-two, excluding the seven branches of enlightenment and the eightfold noble path, exist in the desire realm and the peak of existence (the fifteen that do not obtain this name due to faith, etc., that are in accordance with merit). The reason these do not exist is that the desire realm does not have equal abiding, and the mind's movement at the peak of existence is not clear, so these two grounds do not rely on the uncontaminated path. Then, how can there be mindfulness of the body in the formless realm? If mindfulness of the body is wisdom that focuses on the body, then these do not exist in their own place. Also, it is said in the scriptures, "The actual virtuous qualities of the formless realm do not have contaminated lower realms as their sphere of activity," so they do not focus on lower grounds. If you ask this, although the formless realm is in its own place, the virtuous contaminated mindfulness of the body, relying on the approximation of infinite space, focuses on the contaminated form of the fourth dhyana. And what is said about "not focusing on lower grounds" means that actual virtuous qualities do not focus on contaminated phenomena. The actual virtuous qualities of the first three formless realms, contaminated and uncontaminated, rely on the six dhyana grounds and focus on the uncontaminated vows. The wisdom of the peak of existence, virtuous and contaminated, relies on dhyana and focuses on the uncontaminated vows. And this is also considered to be transformed form, so the prince (the spiritual friend Grakwa) explains. Furthermore, if there is no non-virtue in the two upper realms, then how can the two right efforts of abandoning what has arisen and preventing what has not arisen exist? Although this is so, afflictions, the obscurations of faith and acceptance, and contaminated dharmas are called sins, because they are ultimately non-virtuous, so one should think in this way. Fourth, the sutra says, "Having known the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, one obtains faith and obtains the morality that pleases the noble ones." If four types of obtaining faith after knowing are taught, then in what situation do those who abide in the aspects of enlightenment obtain faith after knowing, and how?

How are they obtained, and what is their nature? In the path of seeing, if one directly sees the first three truths, such as suffering, it is because they are Dharma; and because they are not the nature of the Buddha and the Sangha, one obtains faith after knowing the discipline and Dharma that the noble ones rejoice in (i.e., obtaining the seven abandonments of the uncontaminated and directly seeing the truth of wisdom—selflessness, therefore merely trusting in the Dharma). One does not obtain faith by knowing the Buddha and the Sangha. If one directly realizes the truth of the path, then the truth of the path (of the non-learner, the learner, and the non-learner) is the Dharma that makes up those two (the Buddha and the Sangha), so one also obtains faith after knowing the Buddha and the Sangha of the Buddha's Shravakas. (i.e., obtaining trust in the path truth of the learner and non-learner). The word "also" includes obtaining faith after knowing discipline and Dharma. Here, because the noble ones rejoice and are pleased with this, the discipline that the noble ones rejoice in is the discipline of the uncontaminated, and knowing and having faith is trusting after directly realizing the truths as they truly are. When seeing the first three truths, how can one obtain faith after knowing the Dharma? Because the Dharma is the learner and the non-learner, and that is also the truth of the path. If one only considers that truth to be the Dharma, then merely seeing suffering would lead to obtaining faith after knowing the Dharma. If that is the case, then how should one say "seeing the three truths"? Here, the word Dharma refers to the first three truths, because their suchness is the Dharma, and cessation is also the most excellent of all Dharmas. Therefore, saying "seeing the three truths leads to obtaining faith after knowing the Dharma" also refers to seeing the three truths appropriately, not as an aggregate. Similarly, the path of the solitary Buddha's non-learner and learner, and the uncontaminated path of the Bodhisattva's stage of learning are also Dharma, because they are the Dharma of direct realization, and because they are not a Sangha, nor are they the Buddha. (For example, a rhinoceros does not gather, and its path does not rely on other sounds, and the path of a Bodhisattva does not rely on the kindness of others.)
