Diligently exerting effort, relying on mindfulness and concentration, and accomplishing merits such as clairvoyance, is for the purpose of abandoning laziness, afflictions, near afflictions of agitation, and the obscurations of equanimity in entering into samadhi. In this regard, right view is wisdom, which is both the noble path and a limb. The others are its retinue, therefore they are separately referred to as the eight limbs of the noble path. Secondly, the seven sections such as the four mindfulnesses are the main ones at that time, so according to the order, the beginners on the path of accumulation, the four applications of mindfulness, and the states of dwelling on the path of cultivation and the path of seeing are well distinguished and established. Among them, the four mindfulnesses are explained in the path of accumulation for beginners. The Madhyantavibhāga states: "To abandon bad states, for the cause of desire, for the root, and to not be deluded, to enter the four truths, meditate on the mindfulnesses." This itself states: "The four are the antidotes to perversion." Therefore, in order to abandon the four perversions towards the body and so on, and to enter into the truth, one should closely examine. In the state of the application of mindfulness, the warm stage, there are four right abandonments, because by obtaining the cause of the difference between the object and the aspect, effort is increased. At the peak is the miraculous foot, because obtaining the peak does not cease, so in order to enter the forbearance of not losing the root of virtue that has been obtained. Forbearance is the faculties, because the former two are likely to be lost, but this one is not likely to be lost, so in order to obtain mastery over what is not lost. The highest mundane dharma is the powers, in order not to be overwhelmed by the opposing afflictions and other mundane dharmas. The path of cultivation is the limbs of enlightenment, because the path of seeing is distant because it is separated by the path of cultivation, and the path of cultivation is not separated by other paths, it is the proximate cause of realizing the knowledge of the exhaustion of birth of enlightenment. The path of seeing is the eight limbs of the noble path, because the path of cultivation has the distinction of grounds, so it is not a quick progression, but the path of seeing does not have the distinction of grounds, so it is a quick progression. The Sutra states: Enlightenment

The Vaibhashikas believe that teaching the limbs of enlightenment first is in accordance with the numerical order of seven and eight. Other teachers and so on believe that, in order to first cut off the mind's distraction to the objects mentioned in the sutras, such as form, sound, etc., and their differences, such as colors, shapes, and many other things, as an antidote, one should cultivate the four mindfulnesses. As the Madhyantavibhāga says: "The unfavorable and favorable, all categories are completely known, to abandon them, diligence arises in four ways." Thus, with the power of mindfulness, diligence increases, and in order to generate the four necessary diligences, by correctly settling the mind, these are the right abandonments. Then, in order to subdue samadhi, these are the feet of miraculous powers. Relying on samadhi, the five faculties, such as faith, which become the masters who lead to the transcendental dharmas, are the faculties. These themselves overcome the unfavorable side, these are the powers. In order to directly realize the suchness of all dharmas at the very beginning, the path of seeing is the limbs of enlightenment. In order to cultivate both the path of seeing and the path of cultivation, these are the eightfold noble path. As the Mahāsaṃnipāta Sūtra of the Six Sense Fields says: "When the eightfold noble path is cultivated to perfection, then the four mindfulnesses are cultivated to perfection, up to the seven limbs of enlightenment are cultivated to perfection." Thus, the sutras also say that the path of cultivation has eight limbs. Also, as the sutras say: "Bhikkhu, what is called 'speaking the truth as it is' is another name for the four noble truths. Bhikkhu, what is called 'the conduct of the path of how to realize' is another name for the eightfold noble path." Thus it is said that these two words successively indicate the path of seeing and the path of cultivation, because the path of how to realize can enter and arise up to enlightenment. Thus, the sutras also say that the path of seeing has limbs of the path, therefore one should not disturb the order spoken of in the sutras. The Mahayana practitioners believe that the middle
