Those who enter the formless realm and attain Nirvana in the present life are the seven types of non-returners. If those who enter the form realm are counted as one type, then there are three types. Each of the five, such as attaining Nirvana in the intermediate state, can be divided by other locations. For example, in the four meditation grounds, according to the Kashmir tradition, there are seven types, but there are no other separate locations. Because it is a place of view, there are sixteen types, sixteen types, excluding the Great Brahma. If divided by lineage, there are six types, six types, such as those who are subject to decline. If divided by detachment from desire, there are nine types, nine types, from those who possess all bonds to the eight aspects of their own realm, up to detachment from desire. If divided by faculties, there are three types, three types, such as those with sharp faculties. Thus, if one divides those who attain Nirvana in the intermediate state, there are two thousand five hundred and ninety-two types. Similarly, the other four, such as those who attain Nirvana after birth, can also be applied, so in general, there are twelve thousand nine hundred and sixty types of non-returners.

Thus, after the ninth level of the lower realms is abandoned, it is considered as one with the complete bondage of the level above it. Abandoning the ninth level of one's own realm is a distinction because existence cannot be achieved there, so it is said. Thus, if distinguished by place, lineage, freedom from desire, and differences in faculties, there are twelve thousand nine hundred and sixty. Thus, there are six lineages in one place. Each lineage also has nine due to abandonment, that is, nine sixes are fifty-four. Fifty-four times sixteen is eight hundred and sixty-four. This is tripled by the difference in faculties. The five that will be explained are also combined in the same way, so that when all are added together, there are twelve thousand nine hundred and sixty non-returners in order to go to the realm of form.) So, what does it mean that the sutra says, "For the sake of approaching the realm of form, nine non-returners are taught"? In the intermediate state, attaining nirvana is like dying as a small spark of morning appears; and dying like a spark of iron rising; and dying like a spark of iron rising without falling to the ground, these three metaphors illustrate the speed, non-speed, and attaining nirvana after a long time; from birth to attaining nirvana, there are three situations: just born, with fabrication, and without fabrication; upward transfer, there are three situations such as jumping. Thus, each of these three situations is further divided into three, so it is said that there are nine non-returners who approach the realm of form. (The reason for distinguishing is) The differences between these three and nine non-returners lie in their respective karmas, there are three situations: intermediate state accomplishment, experiencing retribution after birth, and experiencing retribution multiple times; there are three situations of faculties: sharp, medium, and dull; there are three situations of afflictions: small, medium, and large; faculties and afflictions also have differences such as sharpest of the sharp and easiest to abandon of the easy, smallest of the small, etc. The same should be said for the swiftness and so on in the intermediate state. Among them, the first two sets of three have differences in faculties and afflictions, but there is no difference in karma, because the first three are the same in the karma of manifest accomplishment, and the latter three are the same in experiencing retribution after birth. The last set of three

These are the distinctions of karma, affliction, and the three poisons. Then, what are the seven types of noble beings mentioned in the Madhyama Agama? It is because, approaching the realm of form, the nine types of non-returners are counted without being divided into the three higher transmigrations, hence they are considered the seven types of noble beings. (Why are the higher transmigrations not distinguished?) It is because there are many variations in meditation, such as alternating and non-alternating, entering one or two realms, and leaping, etc. To avoid confusing the minds of those to be tamed, they are distinguished in this way. Why are only these (among the learners) called noble? Because they engage in noble virtuous deeds, (because they are free from attachment to desire, they abandon non-virtuous deeds) they do not engage in non-noble non-virtuous deeds, and once they have attained these paths, they do not regress. Therefore, only they are the stream of noble beings, while ordinary beings and learners with attachment do not possess these qualities. Moreover, although the non-learners are noble, they do not go to higher realms. Then, what does the sutra mean when it says, "What is a noble being? It is one who possesses the right view of a learner up to samadhi"? It is because they have obtained the vows not to commit the five sins, from killing to drinking alcohol, and they have also abandoned other sins, such as those to be abandoned by seeing and those to be abandoned by cultivating in the desire realm, so they are said to be nominally noble because they have abandoned most of them. Here, however, it is to show the non-nominal noble ones. If one asks: If one sees the noble truth in the desire realm (for the first time) and then attains the non-returner, are there also distinctions such as passing into nirvana in the intermediate state? No, because a noble one who has completed his life in the desire realm does not go to other realms such as the form realm. (Therefore, the life of one who has attained non-returning will attain nirvana.) (This is also because the desire realm has much suffering, so they are weary.) The so-called noble one who has completed his life in the desire realm is one who has attained the stream-enterer or once-returner in the first life in the desire realm, and after death, is reborn in the desire realm for the second time. They do not go to other realms because the desire realm has much suffering, and they are very weary of suffering and turn away from it.
