I cannot transcend the place of birth.) This is due to cultivating vipassana by delighting in wisdom from the perspective of cause, cultivating samadhi, and cultivating shamatha by delighting in samadhi, without cultivating samadhi. First, if one does not cultivate samadhi from the perspective of cause, then from the perspective of result, one reaches the ultimate Akanistha heaven, which can also be divided into three types: leaping, half-leaping, and dying and transmigrating in all places. The first refers to a noble being born in the desire realm who has become accustomed to the fourth dhyana. Because he has tasted the bliss of the first dhyana, he declines from the upper three dhyanas and, upon death and rebirth, is born in the Brahma host and other realms. By the power of previous habit, he cultivates (dhyana) the fourth dhyana (fifteen) and is born in Akanistha, where he attains arhatship. The second refers to (having become accustomed to cultivating three or six dhyanas on the basis of the Brahma host), on the previous basis, being born in any one of the heavens below the five Pure Abodes, and then (after cultivating the fifteenth dhyana) being born in Akanistha and attaining arhatship. The third refers to going to all sixteen places except for the Great Brahma, and attaining arhatship in the body of Akanistha. One is not born in the Great Brahma heaven because it is the place of views and the place of a single lord, and therefore it is abandoned by the noble ones. It is reasonable that some are born gradually from below the Clear Light and attain arhatship on that basis, so it is clear that it is not necessarily limited to these three. The so-called non-returner does not only mean non-returning in the desire realm, but refers to the fact that no matter where a noble being is born, he will not return to that place or below it (therefore it is called complete non-returning). For example, a non-returner born in the first dhyana heaven will not return to the desire realm or the first dhyana heaven, and so on. These noble beings either attain arhatship on that basis, or they move upwards, because they are special. (One will not be born in the Cloudless Heaven and other realms after declining from cultivation, because the cultivator is a practitioner of the fourth dhyana and will not be declined by the afflictions of his own realm. If he declines, he will be born in the Pure Abodes.) The second is not cultivating samadhi from the perspective of cause, but not cultivating samadhi from the perspective of cause.

is to go to the ultimate peak of existence, that is, to go successively to all places except the five Pure Abodes from the first to the fourth dhyana, and then to go to the formless realms and attain Arhatship at the peak of existence. Although there are cases where Arhatship is attained in the lower levels in those upward transitions, the reason for saying that the ultimate is the Non-Returner and the peak of existence is that there is no higher place to go than those. For example, it is possible for a Stream-Enterer to attain Nirvana after realizing two or three existences, but after that, the eighth existence will not be realized, so if it reaches the extreme, it is said to be the seventh time. If going to the ultimate peak of existence is to go to the realm of form, how can that be? Because that is to go to the formless realm. Although that is so, the reason for saying that is because it goes successively to all places except the Pure Abodes, and then goes to the formless realm. These do not go to the Pure Abodes because the Pure Abodes are the abode of the Noble Ones, so after dying from there, they will not be reborn in the place of formless children. And those rebirths will not go to the abode of the Noble Ones, because that is the nature of things. Other than going near to the realm of form, the Non-Returner does not come because they go near to the formless realm. Those who have attained the Non-Returner in the desire realm and have separated from desire for the realm of form will be born in the formless realm and attain Arhatship. If divided, there are four types: after being born, with effort, entering Nirvana without effort, and upward transition. Therefore, since there is no intermediate state, it is impossible to enter Nirvana in the intermediate state. The so-called four types refer to the range below the sphere of nothingness, because there is no upward transition in the peak of existence. Other than the previously mentioned Non-Returners, there are also those who attain Arhatship in this very life and enter Nirvana. (If the Nirvana of Seeing the Dharma is divided by dependence, there are nine types. If divided by abandonment, there are nine types of abandonment through meditation of the dhyanas and the four formless absorptions, four nines are thirty-six multiplied by two, subtracting the ninth abandonment of the peak of existence, leaving seventy-one. Other divisions are similar, totaling 1662 types.) Thus, there are five types of Non-Returners who go to the realm of form, and the realm of
