Among the sixteen (any one), one attains Arhatship in the intermediate state (without remainder). (This is because the Dharma nature causes one to stay in the intermediate state for a long time and gives rise to afflictions.) The second is (unable to pass through the intermediate state), because there is both diligence in meditating on the path and the natural arising of the path, so one attains Arhatship immediately after being born in the Brahma realm and so on. (Some say that one passes away in the remainderless aggregates, which is unreasonable, because there is no power to abandon life. To obtain this power, one must be an Arhat who has attained the fourth dhyana of the highest limit and has keen power. If so, passing through the intermediate state becomes having power over life. If one says that there is no power, but karma causes one to stay, just like experiencing the result after birth, there is no powerful force, so one quickly passes away in the remainderless. This is because the measure has been completed. Therefore, they are not the same.) The third is that although there is diligence, the path does not arise naturally, so one attains Arhatship by striving to meditate on the path. The fourth is that there is no diligence and the path does not arise naturally, so one attains Arhatship without striving to meditate on the path after being born in the Brahma realm and so on for a long time, which is the view of the Vaibhashikas. The teacher, however, says that the sutra says, "Without mental effort, one is completely liberated from suffering, and with mental effort, one is completely liberated from suffering," because Nirvana appears before non-volition, so in accordance with this, one obtains through non-effort and effort, and achieves through non-volition and volition, so the path arises naturally and does not arise naturally, and considers non-volition to be the third. Although the natural arising of the path is similar, it is not different from after birth, because Nirvana after birth is the most natural arising of the path, the path is greatest through accumulating causes and conditions, and the greatest path itself exhausts, so the subtle increase is the smallest, while non-volition is not like that. Fifth, one does not attain Arhatship in the Brahma realm and other places of the first dhyana, but transfers upward to the lesser light realm and so on to attain Arhatship, that is, transferring upward (here it refers to although one has attained the non-returner, but due to the karma of experiencing the result in other times, the intermediate state
