If, having abandoned them, they still arise, then they would also arise in those noble ones, and thus they would not become once-returners, etc., if one asks. To this, the Vaibhashikas say, 'If there is decline even in the noble ones, what need is there to mention ordinary people? However, it is impossible for those noble ones who are preceded by detachment from desire to decline, because they have been stabilized by the two paths of the mundane and the supramundane.' The Sutrantikas, etc., think that the mundane path only abandons the manifest aspects of what is to be abandoned and causes the seeds to deteriorate, but it does not abandon them from the root, so even those detached from desire will revert. However, those noble ones who are preceded by detachment from desire, because they have abandoned the manifest aspects of the afflictions to be abandoned by cultivation through the mundane path, and because the seeds are also abandoned immediately by the supramundane path of cultivation that arises immediately, therefore, after that, it is impossible to come into desire more than once, and therefore they are called once-returners and non-returners. In the Compendium of Topics, it says, 'The stream-enterer brings forth all at once,' which refers to obtaining the path of seeing by relying on the unwavering proximity of the first dhyana, thereby abandoning what is to be abandoned by the path of seeing and attaining the fruit of stream-entry. After that, through the supramundane path of cultivation, by focusing on the truth of the three realms all at once, abandoning the smallest of the small, etc., of what is to be abandoned by cultivation in the desire realm, just as abandoning the most minute of the most minute, etc., of the peak of existence, one manifests the arhat without obtaining the once-returner and the non-returner. The gradual one should be described as someone who has not previously abandoned any of what is to be abandoned by the path of seeing and cultivation, someone who is completely bound by bonds, who first abandons what is to be abandoned by the path of seeing in the three realms through the path of seeing. Then, through the path of cultivation, either contaminated or uncontaminated, one abandons what is to be abandoned by cultivation, thereby gradually obtaining the four fruits completely, and there are also cases of obtaining three or two fruits. Among these, the entering and abiding in the stream-enterer, the once-returner, and the arhat are explained as four types. The first refers to the fact that just as there are nine types of afflictions to be abandoned by cultivation in the desire realm, so too in each of the eight grounds from the first dhyana to the peak of existence, there are great faults to be abandoned.

There are three types: small, medium, and large. Each of them also has nine forms, from the greatest of the great to the smallest of the small, so there are eighty-one in total. Just as each of those grounds has ninety-nine things to be abandoned, so too, the path of meditation on the antidote qualities, without obstruction, and the paths of liberation also have ninety-nine, eighty-one in total. (Starting from the invincible) How is it? Each of them has three forms of the meditation path: small, medium, and large, and each of them is also different due to the distinctions of smallness, etc. Among them, the greatest of the great to be abandoned is abandoned by the smallest of the small of the antidote meditation path because it is easy to abandon, just as a coarse stain on clothing is removed with little effort. Similarly, it should be understood that the smallest of the small to be abandoned is abandoned by the greatest of the great of the meditation path, etc. The first is because there is no possibility of a great path, and when a great path arises, there is no possibility of great afflictions. Among them, the fifteen moments of the path of seeing are entering the first fruit, and the sixteenth is merely abiding, as previously stated. (In general, if divided only by faith, there are three by faculty and five by lineage. By abandonment, there are six from possessing all bonds to abandoning the fifth. There are nine by support. There is no difference by path, because all are sixteen. There are eight hundred and ten in general. The attainment of the path of seeing also has no difference by lineage, and the others are the same as before, with a total of one hundred and sixty-two.) The one who abides in the fruit of stream-entry has not exhausted even one of the afflictions that should be abandoned by meditation before. If they have not been abandoned, then that is how it is. If they are extremely delayed, there may be seven rebirths, so they are called seven-time existents. Some sutras say that if one eats meat, it is seven times, and if one is extremely delayed, it is seven times. The Vaibhashikas say that taking seven existences of gods and seven existences of humans and two sets of seven existences of the intermediate state, a total of twenty-eight existences, but because the seven existences are similar in dharma, they are called seven-time existents, like seven leaves of a tree. The Sutrantikas and others say that if that is the case, then in the Many Realms Sutra, it says that a person who is perfect in view manifests the eighth existence.
