The Establishment of the Practitioner's Pudgala The Establishment of the Practitioner's Pudgala Now, the pudgala will be explained. The term "pudgala" refers to the designation applied to the continuum of four or five skandhas. As stated in the Vinaya Sutra: "The continuum is called a pudgala, and the holding of characteristics is called dharma. In this, there is no one who revolves in samsara, nor is there anyone who passes into nirvana." The sutras also state, "The skandhas are called a pudgala." Furthermore, the Arhatnis say, "Just as the collection of limbs is called a chariot, similarly, relying on the skandhas, it is conventionally called a sentient being." Additionally, the Venerable Youthful Lotus says, "The continuum of skandhas, if it is virtuous, also has non-virtuous results. That is called life, and if it is said to be without life, it becomes nonexistent." Some argue that if the aggregation of the five skandhas is called a pudgala, then there would be no pudgala in the formless realm. If it is said to be imputed, then even a pot would become a pudgala. Therefore, the continuum of individual consciousnesses of all seeds is the pudgala. As stated in the "Determination of the Three Continuums": "If one considers imputation and aggregation, the continuum of the five skandhas is not a pudgala. Therefore, the continuum of individual consciousnesses of all seeds is considered to be the pudgala." This is the tenet of the Yogacara school. Therefore, the noble pudgala refers to the continuum of four or five skandhas endowed with uncontaminated wisdom. In explaining this, there are three divisions: eightfold, sevenfold, and twofold. The first of these is further divided into three: proceeding with detachment from desire, gradual progression, and differentiated explanation. The first is that, through the worldly path of meditation, from the eight grounds below the peak of existence, detachment from desire precedes the attainment of the path of seeing. That is, the commentary explains two types: detachment from desire in general and detachment from desire in the desire realm. The first is the abandonment of the sixth to eighth aspects of desire, and the second is the abandonment of the ninth aspect of desire up to the ninth aspect of the sphere of nothingness, as explained by the tika. Attaining the path of seeing after abandoning the fifth aspect is not explained as proceeding with detachment from desire. Worldly

In the commentary on "The Result Obtained by Dependence," it also says that there are two results obtained by the worldly path. Therefore, the two intermediate fruits have the preliminary (detachment from desire), while the first and last two do not have the preliminary (detachment from desire). (It is also said in the Śrāvakabhūmi: If one is free from desire for desire from the beginning, then as soon as he attains the path of seeing, he will become a non-returner. If he is mostly free from desire for desire, then as soon as he attains the path of seeing, he will become a once-returner. If he is not free from desire for desire, then he will become a stream-enterer. The abode here is a different entity.)

For example, "drawing water" is the fourth case, and "birds on the tree" is the seventh case. "Washing hands and eating food" is a collection, and "where there is smoke, there is fire; here there is smoke, here there is no fire" is juxtaposition. For example, "When will I become like this, and after becoming like that" is aspiration, and "How much work should be done on that basis" is the basis for measurement, and "Is it at that time?" involves time. The commentary says that "out of eight, for the sake of two fruits" is the reason for the fourth "for the sake of". The previously mentioned sixth to ninth of the desire realm's abandonment through meditation, except for the ninth, the middle part of the eighth great category, are exhausted and abandoned by the worldly path, abiding in the fifteenth moment. Furthermore, if these two have previously abandoned all the afflictions of the desire realm with the worldly path, or from then until the realm of nothingness, one who is free from desire obtains the fifteenth moment of the path of seeing, which is entering the third fruit of non-return. Whoever, following faith or following the Dharma, abides in the fifteenth moment of entering any fruit, such as the first fruit of stream-enterer, in the sixteenth moment, they will abide in the fruit of stream-enterer, etc., but will not become a stream-enterer, a follower of faith, or a follower of the Dharma. Therefore, there is a difference in realization between entering and abiding with the prior detachment from desire, but there is no difference in abandonment, because it is distinguished by the fifteenth and sixteenth moments of wisdom, while the abandonment is the same. An Arhat does not attain through prior detachment from desire, because one cannot attain Arhatship without abandoning the cultivation abandonment of the peak of existence, and the path of seeing does not abandon the cultivation abandonment (i.e., it cannot be destroyed by patience, only by the path of cultivation, if it is said to be abandoned by the worldly path of cultivation), and the lower ground and one's own ground with outflows cannot be abandoned, because there is no worldly ground higher than it, so there is also no worldly path to abandon the cultivation abandonment of the peak of existence. (Even a stream-enterer does not have prior detachment from desire, because without seeing all the truths, one cannot abandon the abandonment of seeing of the peak of existence, so before
