It was thought that even if one is free from desire in the desire realm, one does not obtain the fruit of non-return. The absence of the path of seeing is because the path of seeing is focused on all three realms, while the formless realm is: The actual virtues of the formless realm, The object of practice is the lower realm with outflows. Because it does not focus on the lower realm. (If it is said that there are also those who are born without hearing the Dharma) If there is no form, then two kinds of self-generation are impossible, and even if there is direct realization of the Hearer, it is impossible to obtain it without hearing from others, because there is no man who listens to the Dharma there, (and because it does not focus on the desire realm. The path of seeing must first focus on the suffering of the desire realm, but the formless realm does not focus on it.) Furthermore, the sutra says: If you are weary, you will be free from desire. Ordinary beings born in the form realm are attached to the bliss of meditative absorption, and because they have no feeling of suffering, they do not become weary of samsara. And without weariness, one cannot attain the noble path. Such is the reasoning. The Sutra of the Ten Sets also says that there are ten kinds of individuals: What are the ten? Born from one class to another, if the ultimate is reached, it is the seventh time, one interval, once returning, the five from passing into nirvana in the intermediate state to being reborn upwards, and the Arhat. Among these ten types of individuals, the first four and the Arhat begin here and end here. The five individuals from passing into nirvana in the intermediate state to being reborn upwards begin here and end there. Because it says so. (It is not said that non-Aryas begin there.) Here refers to the desire realm, and beginning refers to beginning with the method of extinction. There refers to the upper realm. For the time being, it is like that in terms of realms. If it is said, "If it is not the immutable knowledge of exhaustion, if it is not the wisdom of non-birth," then are there also differences in Arhats? Yes, the differences in Arhats are stated in the sutra: Monks, these six are Arhats, what are the six? One who is subject to decline, one who thinks of death, one who protects, one who abides.

Not moving from [samadhi], possessing a share of realization, and possessing the nature of immovability. As it is said, it is accepted that there are six types. These are, in order, the first five all have the possibility of falling away, but due to small causes, they fall away from their own realization; thinking of passing away from suffering due to doubting falling away; diligently guarding the path due to doubting falling away; not moving from realization due to small causes; the faculties transforming and not moving, possessing a share of realization; and not falling away from realization due to sharp faculties. Thus, even sharp faculties can be of two types: naturally sharp and sharp due to the transformation of faculties. Thus, among these six Arhats, the first five are born from faith and aspiration when the faculties are dull during the path of meditation. The mental liberation of these five is a combination of time, that is, it depends on the completeness of favorable conditions such as food, clothing, and shelter, and the absence of unfavorable conditions such as diseases and thorns of enemies, hence it is called liberation of time. The sixth, possessing the nature of immovability, does not fall away from realization, and because of that immovability, it does not depend on the presence or absence of favorable or unfavorable conditions (i.e., samadhi manifests at will), hence it is liberated without being combined with time. It arises from the cause obtained by seeing with sharp faculties during the time of the path of meditation, because the difference in the result depends on the difference in the cause. Also, during the time of learning, the immovability that arises from the transformation of faculties into faith-understanding or seeing-obtaining, or from naturally sharp faculties, arises from the cause of seeing-obtaining, but not during the time of no-more-learning, the immovability of the faculties transforming into the immovability of dull or sharp faculties does not arise from the cause of seeing-obtaining, as explained in the टीका. Liberation combined with time and not combined with time means that samadhi manifests or does not manifest at will, or that realization may or may not fall away, it should be known as liberation until another time and permanent liberation. The sixth, are those Arhats determined to be of their lineage from the beginning, or do they become them later? (Answer:

(Those who have not changed their lineage) Some are definitely of the nature of complete degeneration from the beginning, while others are transformed later through the cultivation of faculties (or abilities). For example, the category of those with the nature of complete degeneration can be transformed into the nature of thinking about death through the cultivation of faculties, and so on. The reason for these transformations into six types is that, in the order, when learning, there is neither constant effort nor respectful effort in the practice of the path; there are neither of the two, especially no respectful effort; there is only constant effort; there is respectful effort; dull faculties with both efforts; and sharp faculties with both efforts. It is possible that those with the nature of complete degeneration, etc., are also like that, but it is not definite. Thus, it is possible that there are six types of Arhats in all three realms. According to those who assert that there will definitely be complete degeneration, etc., there are six distinctions in the desire realm, but in the two upper realms, there are only the fourth and sixth, because those born there and above: "Complete degeneration, changing faculties do not rely." Therefore, in those two (the noble ones, that is, those whose faculties are mature, without weariness and without harming themselves and others), because there is no complete degeneration, there are no first three; because there is no changing of faculties, there is no fifth either. If all of these degenerate from their own fruit and lineage? The middle four will degenerate from their respective lineages, but the first will not degenerate from their own lineage, because that lineage is not artificial, and there is no lower lineage than that (because it is impossible to transform from that). All of the first five will degenerate from the fruit, because there is a basis for what is to be abandoned by meditation, and the fruit is temporary, so even those with the nature of complete degeneration may degenerate from the fruit. However, not all of those who have determined their lineage from the beginning will degenerate, because those who are determined to be Arhats thinking about death, etc., are stabilized by both learning and the path of learning. (The non-learner who has cultivated his faculties at the time of begging also does not degenerate, so said the learned monk Dünzang. The first lineage of learning has also passed away.)
