If one is separated from desire from the lower grounds, does the final path of liberation arise entirely in the nature of proximity, or does it arise in the nature of reality? For a person who has overcome the afflictions of the three grounds of desire realm, first dhyana, and second dhyana (in the nine grounds of existence) through proximity, if that person is of sharp faculties, then the final path of liberation arises from the actual ground of dhyana. Because the feeling of equanimity in proximity is actual, it is possible to shift to joy and happiness (and because of little delight in proximity). But if the person is of dull faculties, then the ninth and final path of liberation arises from proximity, not from the actual ground. Because in the third dhyana, the feeling of proximity and reality are different, it is not possible to shift the feeling (and because it is difficult to generate happiness and joy after equanimity). Separating from desire from the third dhyana and above, up to the fourth dhyana, the final liberation does not arise from proximity, but it arises from the actual ground of those grounds. Because there is no difference in the feeling of equanimity between proximity and reality, the actual ground (of the path of liberation) arises without depending on effort. (This is also because of the respect previously generated for the ground of separation from desire. However, it is not the actual ground of the lower grounds, because desire has already been separated by its proximity.) Having explained the manner of separating from desire with the first uncontaminated ground, what remains unsaid is that the noble ones, that is, the remaining eight uncontaminated grounds, will overcome the afflictions of their own ground and the higher grounds, but not the lower grounds, because they have already been overcome by proximity alone. Among them, the eight noble ones are all (noble ones) except for the proximity of the first dhyana. The uninterrupted paths and liberation paths of those grounds are those that arise with the aspects of the truths such as impermanence. If the supramundane path has the object-aspect of the truths, then what is the mundane path? The uninterrupted path of the mundane path is coarse because it is accomplished by extremely intense manifest effort in dependence on the higher grounds in sequence, and the extremely many bad destinies included by "etc.", so it is not

Because it is solidified dirt, just as a wall will definitely not arise from the wall itself, so too, land will definitely not arise from the land itself. Therefore, it has the appearance of being regarded as a thick wall, and it is the realm of the lower, that is, it is focused on the lower land. The path of liberation, in sequence, is the opposite of the former, it is peaceful, and so on, abundant, possessing the aspect of definite departure, and it is the realm of the higher, that is, it is focused on the higher land. Secondly, then what wisdom arises after the cessation of knowledge? If the Arhat is of sharp faculties and possesses the Dharma of immovability, then because he does not degenerate, from the knowledge of cessation arises the wisdom of non-arising, that is, wisdom arises. If he is not of the Dharma of immovability, then from the knowledge of cessation arises only the continuum of the knowledge of cessation, or the Right View of No More Learning arises, but not the knowledge of non-arising, because there is a time when afflictions arise, so there is a possibility of degeneration, and from the knowledge of non-arising there is no degeneration. The Right View of No More Learning arises in all Arhats, and even for those who possess the Dharma of immovability, sometimes from the knowledge of non-arising only the knowledge of non-arising arises, and sometimes the Right View of No More Learning arises. Thirdly, if it is said that there are four fruits of the ascetic's conduct, then what is the ascetic? What is the conduct? What is the fruit? The ascetic is the continuum of completely pacifying afflictions in whatever way is appropriate, that is, the noble person. The conduct of the ascetic is the method of completely pacifying afflictions, that is, the stainless, unobstructed path, that is, the path of liberation is the fruit of the ascetic's conduct. Therefore, in the Middle Length Discourses it is said: "How does one become an ascetic? By pacifying sins, unwholesome dharmas, all afflictions, diseases, and ripening sufferings in future rebirths, from birth to death, thus one becomes an ascetic." Therefore, this is the path of non-outflow, and not the path of outflow (although liberated from heaviness and lightness, it is still accompanied by the residue of faults) that can completely pacify. The fruit of that ascetic's conduct is both conditioned and unconditioned, that is, those.
