Moreover, in order to counteract the four inverted thoughts of clinging to the body as pure, feeling as happiness, mind as permanence, and phenomena as self, the four mindfulnesses of body and so on are taught. In the *Madhyāntavibhāga* it says, "To eliminate bad states, to eliminate the cause of desire, to eliminate the basis, and to eliminate ignorance, one should engage in the four truths, therefore it is said to cultivate mindfulness." It is taught that one should cultivate these in order to enter the four truths. Among these, the body is the place of bad states and possesses the suffering of fabrication, therefore, by examining it, one can enter the truth of suffering. Feeling is examined as the cause of desire, therefore one enters the truth of origin. The mind is the basis of clinging to self, therefore by examining it, one enters the truth of cessation, because there is no fear of the self being annihilated. By examining each of the phenomena such as perception, one enters the truth of the path, because there is no ignorance regarding the defiled and purified phenomena. Thus, these also show the necessity. Among these, the first three are their respective objects, because observing the respective objects such as the body is observing unmixed objects. The fourth is observing all phenomena, and if it is observing mixed objects, then it is observing feeling, formations, and the unconditioned, and if it is only observing unmixed objects. Thus, by becoming accustomed to the mindfulness of observing unmixed objects such as the body, becoming accustomed to this is the mindfulness of phenomena, the object is the general body, feeling, mind, and phenomena, generally summarized, the mind abides in observing mixed objects, and for the general objects, one observes and analyzes impermanence, suffering, emptiness, and selflessness. (The three objects of self-characteristic, general characteristic, and mixed are the three great, medium, and small of the path of accumulation, so it is said.) Thus, the two, śamatha and vipaśyanā, are the main parts of the path of accumulation, therefore they are taught here, otherwise, the virtue of generating bodhicitta for each person, everything that exists before the path of application is also the path of accumulation. Here, in classifying the general meaning of the path, there are two types: the general classification of the path and the specific explanation of the path of accumulation. Among these, the first also has three characteristics, some say that the virtue of striving for liberation does not pervade the path of no more learning, because

The Buddhas do not strive or exert effort for liberation, because for you who have perfected merit: there is no merit arising from action. Whatever you desire, it depends solely on your wish, because it is said that way. The Hearers and Solitary Realizers who are non-learners have also already attained liberation, so there is no need to strive for it. Some say "leading to liberation," but that would be too broad, encompassing everyone. Therefore, it is the entrance to liberation, because the path of the non-learner is also the entrance to the remainderless Nirvana. The first of the two divisions is the five paths from the path of accumulation to the path of the non-learner. Regarding the meaning of the division, some say that the first two paths are named after the result of the cause of the path, and the latter is named after the cause of the result, but the defining characteristic is only the two, seeing and meditation. This is not correct, if the path of the non-learner is not the defining characteristic, then it will not be included in the truth of the path, and if so, it would lead to the existence of conditioned phenomena not included in the four truths, which is unanswerable. If the truth of the path is the path, but not the path itself, then the noble ones would be confused, because they see what is not the path as the truth of the path. Some people think that the path of accumulation and the path of preparation are also the defining characteristics, which is not reasonable. If they are the true defining characteristics of the path of truth, then they will become uncontaminated, and if so, then when those paths are obtained, they will become noble ones, because the uncontaminated path arises in the continuum. This also contradicts the repeated statement that the first uncontaminated moment is only the forbearance of knowing the Dharma in suffering. (From the Compendium of Determinations: The sixteen aspects of the truths can be worldly or transmundane. What is the difference between the worldly and the transmundane? It is because of not being well-entered into what is to be known and being well-entered, having obscurations and not having obscurations, having conceptualization and not having conceptualization. This is the difference. In its commentary, it says: The worldly are those who are not well-entered into what is to be known, have obscurations, and have conceptualization, that is, they have not realized the suchness of the four truths, have latent afflictions, and have verbal expressions that mix names and meanings.)
