Seeing the merits makes it stable, powerful, and strong, and seeing the faults of distraction prevents it from being taken away by the causes of distraction. The three of the third are to pacify, to make it one, and to make it abide equally. As it says in the scripture: "Greed, displeasure, etc., should be pacified as they arise." And, "From that disciplined and diligent one, with effort upon his own mind, he obtains natural arising." And, "From habit, he does not make effort," which shows the order. By the cause of distraction, the near afflictions are pacified, by effort one gains control over one's own mind, and without effort one gains control over one's own mind. It is also said in the *Bodhicaryāvatāra*: "By the power of śamatha and vipaśyanā, one can cut off all afflictions. Knowing this, first seek śamatha, which is accomplished by detachment from the world." Therefore, by one who has accomplished śamatha, afflictions are abandoned from the root, and in order to generate the wisdom of vipaśyanā, one should cultivate the four mindfulnesses. By cultivating the four mindfulnesses, vipaśyanā is also accomplished. The sūtra also says: "Monks, this is the one and only path, namely the four mindfulnesses. This is the unmixed collection of virtue, namely the four mindfulnesses." How to cultivate? Regarding the body, the aggregate of form; the feelings, the aggregate of feeling; the mind, the six aggregates of consciousness; and the phenomena, the ideas, formations, and unconditioned phenomena, one should cultivate by contemplating in order their arising and what arises, or what can be form; experiencing the difference in meaning by one's own power; experiencing only the nature of meaning by one's own power; grasping at characteristics, etc., one's own nature; and contemplating all conditioned phenomena as impermanent, all contaminated phenomena as suffering, all phenomena as empty, and selfless, that is, by fully examining the two common characteristics. Among these, if mindfulness is classified, there are three types of mindfulness: self-nature, relation, and object. Among these, the nature of the first is wisdom. Moreover, it arises from hearing, etc., it arises from cultivation, and it is not merely obtained by birth.

If asked, how does wisdom become mindfulness? The Vaibhashikas say that by generating the power of memory, those wisdoms are generated and entered, therefore it is mindfulness, that is, naming the cause by the effect. The teacher says that mindfulness is established by this wisdom, therefore it is mindfulness, that is, naming the cause by the effect. If these are to be distinguished, the sutra says: "In the inner body, the outer body, and the inner and outer body, abide contemplating the body." And so on, so it is divided into three types. Among them, the inner body, etc., are successively one's own, the outer vessel, and the form of other continuums. External feelings, etc., are feelings, etc., that are directed towards the external, etc. Following contemplation is Vipassana, and abiding is Shamatha, it should be known as such. Alternatively, the inner body, etc., are successively one's own inner sense base of form, one's own outer sense base of form, the outer vessel, the inner sense base of form of other continuums, and the external sense bases that exist in the collection of one's own inner sense base of form. The three, feeling, etc., arise depending on those three bodies. Asanga said this. Apart from the nature of mindfulness, the mind and mental factors that are in accordance with that wisdom are related mindfulness. The objects of the former two, that is, naming the four bodies, etc., with the object-possessor, are the objects of mindfulness. Among them, wisdom and memory are the nature of mindfulness, the related corresponding minds and mental factors are companions, and the body, etc., are the objects, as stated in the Compendium of Topics. The order of those mindfulnesses is like the order of arising, because they are first realized in a gross order, so the Vaibhashikas think. The teacher thinks that the basis of desire is the body, and because of the desire for pleasant feelings, and because the mind is not peaceful, and because the defiled dharmas have not been abandoned, it is taught in the order of entry. The definite number is the body.
