Because it is not clear and not the basis of the path of seeing. Mindfulness of breathing in and out is unique to this school, because there is no scripture that truly proclaims (the cause of the noble path), and (without scripture) one cannot comprehend the profound Dharma oneself, so it is not a teaching of non-Buddhist outsiders. What are the profound (six)? They are counting breaths, and following, abiding, closely observing, transforming, and completely purifying, which are the instructions possessing six aspects. Among them, counting breaths is (without contrivance, body and mind abiding naturally), focusing the mind on breathing in and out, and counting from one to ten with the mind. If it is less than this number, one suspects sinking, and if it is more than this number, one suspects agitation, so one does not count. Moreover, if one grasps two as one, it is incomplete counting; if one grasps one as two, it is excessive counting; if one counts inhalation as exhalation and exhalation as inhalation, it is confused counting. Counting free from these three faults is correct counting. Following is that these enter gradually with the magnitude of force into the armpits, chest, navel, waist, thighs, buttocks, soles of the feet, and the ground, between the height of a span or a cubit. When exhaling, one should know that from the soles of the feet, gradually through the nostrils, if the force is small, it exhales to the height of a cubit, and if it is large, it exhales to the height of a span. Some say that when entering, it goes to the wheel of wind, and when exhaling, it goes to the dispersing wind, but this is not correct, because this is truly focusing the mind, so that is impossible. Abiding is like a string of jewels, observing that it abides from the tip of the nose to the soles of the feet, and contemplating whether it benefits or harms the body, whether it is cold or hot, and so on. Closely observing is contemplating that these breaths in and out are not merely wind, but are also the nature of the eight material substances of the great elements and the derived elements, and that the mind and mental factors that rely on it are the five aggregates. Transforming is transforming the mind focused on wind, from warmth to the supreme Dharma, correctly combining all roots of virtue from higher to higher. Completely

Complete purification is entering the path of seeing and meditation. Some say that transformation is from mindfulness of nearness to the Vajra-like Samadhi, and complete purification is knowing exhaustion and non-arising, and the correct view of the non-learner. (Abandonment is together with the remaining defilements.) They say so. Therefore, the teacher said in the commentary: Mindfulness of inhaling and exhaling, counting and following, abiding and, observing and transforming, complete purification is considered as six aspects. Thus, a summary verse was made. From which realm do inhalation and exhalation arise? Since it is a part of the body, one should understand that the body that relies on which mind is the realm of that realm. If it relies on the mind of the desire realm, it is the realm of the desire realm, and if it relies on the first dhyana, it is the realm of the first dhyana, until it relies on the third dhyana, it is the wind of the realm of the third dhyana. Since there is no movement of wind in the fourth dhyana, it is not that realm. Moreover, it relies on the body and mind with distinctions, with cavities, and with mind, so it is not for the weak and so on, and without mind and the formless realm. When arising from birth and the fourth dhyana, only wind enters, and when dying and entering the fourth dhyana, only wind exhales. (Impurities and,) Inhaling and exhaling belong to the category of sentient beings, and are not excluded from the continuum. (That is, having obtained or not obtained.) However, since it exists differently from the senses, it is called not being grasped by the mind. Those winds are produced by the cause of equal share, and are produced from the same kind of cause, not from maturation and increase. Because of connecting after interruption, and the form aggregate of maturation does not connect after interruption, and wind decreases when the body grows. Therefore, the commentary says: Because wind decreases when the body grows, it is not produced from growth. Inhaling and exhaling and so on connect again after interruption, so it is not born from maturation. The form aggregate of maturation does not have such a situation, and the commentators also comment on the nature of maturation.

For your form aggregate, such as the eyes, there is no reconnection. For the mind and mental factors, reconnection is unavoidable, so even if the mind and mental factors are born from fruition, there is no contradiction in reconnecting after cessation. Similarly, non-associated formations are also born from fruition, but appear similar to form. These two winds are also perceived by the mind of their own level and higher levels, but the lower level consciousness does not perceive these two winds. If the higher level body produces the lower level mind, how does it occur? From the desire realm to the fourth dhyana, after obtaining the higher level body, the lower level desire realm and other emanation minds and behavioral minds arise. The meaning is that these two minds cannot perceive (if these two minds cannot perceive, then what more to say about the afflicted ones! Among them, the impure contemplation and mindfulness of breathing are the doors to entering the path). Second, generating vipassana, like this, through the two doors of entry, even if the samadhi of shamatha is accomplished, if there is no wisdom of vipassana, the afflictions cannot be eradicated from the root. The sutra says: Afflictions should be destroyed by wisdom. (The nine methods of abiding the mind in shamatha are three methods for the mind not abiding, three methods for making the abiding mind stable, and three methods for gaining mastery over the fruit of stability. Among them, the first three are abiding the mind, continuously abiding, and definitely abiding. The Ornament of the Sutras says: Focus the mind on the object, do not let it be distracted, quickly realize the distraction, and then bind it again to the object. It shows in order, first focusing the mind on the object, holding it without distraction, and pulling it back if it is distracted. The second three are near abiding, taming, and pacifying. The treatise says: The wise person from high to high, should gather the mind inward, and then in order to see the merits, tame the mind of samadhi, in order to see the faults of distraction, not delight in it and make it peaceful. It shows in order, making the mind abide, that is, making it stable, taming the
