The former explains the method of practice, and the latter explains the action of deeds. Thus, in the sutra, for disciples who have completely abandoned their own conduct and the limits of their deeds, and who vow to seek liberation, both conduct and deeds are prescribed. The first three noble lineages prescribe conduct, and the fourth prescribes deeds. Because if you do this deed with this conduct, you will attain liberation without delay, both conduct and deeds are indicated by the four noble lineages. Abandoning one's own conduct of being greedy for clothes, food, etc., and not knowing contentment, and abandoning evil limits of deeds such as agriculture and trade, thereby attaining liberation through correct conduct, being content with little desire for deeds, delighting in renunciation and meditation, and being diligent. Why is it necessary to prescribe such conduct and deeds? The sutra says that the four noble lineages are taught in order to counteract the arising of the four kinds of craving. The sutra says: Bhikshus, if craving arises, it arises for the sake of Dharma robes, for the sake of alms, and for the sake of bedding and cushions. When abiding, one abides. When clinging, one clings. Bhikshus, when craving arises, it arises for the sake of arising and ceasing. Among these, the arising of craving is the first. Abiding is continuous abiding. Clinging is holding on tightly because it is difficult to abandon. Craving, abiding, and clinging arise for the sake of arising and ceasing. Alas, what would be wrong if I were to become an independent one and a universal monarch? And so on, clinging to the arising of craving, fearing evil, alas, what would be wrong if I were to die? What would be wrong if I did not exist or did not arise? And so on, craving for cessation, that is, clinging to annihilation. Among these, the last noble lineage is taught as a remedy for craving for arising and ceasing, and the previous ones are each taught as a remedy. Or, in order to pacify the craving for the three objects of clinging, such as Dharma robes, the first three noble lineages are taught. The fourth noble lineage is taught in order to permanently pacify both the craving for the body, which is an object of clinging, and the craving for Dharma robes and other objects of clinging. Among these, the pacification at that time is temporary abandonment.

is peace, and complete peace is to prevent arising. Second, regarding the path to be cultivated, calm abiding is the path through which a capable practitioner enters into meditation, and it is the path of the collection of boundaries from which one enters. Among these, in order to accomplish calm abiding, the antidote for particularly strong attachment is the contemplation of impurity, and the antidote for particularly strong conceptualization is mindfulness of breathing, that is, inhaling the air of the body inward and exhaling outward. How do these enter separately? Mindfulness of inhaling and exhaling is an antidote to conceptualization because the breath has no various colors or shapes, and by looking inward, it enters into a single object of focus. The contemplation of impurity enters into various specific objects of focus of color and shape, and because it looks outward, it induces conceptualization, so it does not counteract conceptualization, but it does counteract attachment. The sutra says: "Young monks of the learning class, whatever mind has not arisen, if they wish to destroy attachment, they should go to the charnel ground, and then look at the discoloration, then look at the putrefaction, then look at the bones, look at the piles of bones, and so on." Therefore, it is said. Some say that the contemplation of impurity is not an antidote to conceptualization because it contemplates objects close to the eye and looks outward, while mindfulness of inhaling and exhaling is an antidote to conceptualization because it looks inward. So, how does the contemplation of impurity counteract attachment? There are four kinds of attachment: attachment to color, shape, touch, and reverence. Among these, to counteract the first type of attachment, one cultivates the contemplation of impurity by focusing on the three: discoloration, putrefaction, and redness. To counteract the second type of attachment, one cultivates the contemplation of impurity by focusing on the two: being eaten and being scattered. To counteract the third type of attachment, one cultivates the contemplation of impurity by focusing on the two: being gnawed by worms and the skeleton with tendons connecting the sternum. To counteract the fourth type of attachment, one cultivates the contemplation of impurity by focusing on the motionless corpse.
