Explanation of the Stages of Manifest Realization. Explanation of the Stages of Manifest Realization. (Third, the stages of manifest realization are divided into two. A brief explanation is as follows:) First, one who wishes to manifestly realize the truth should abide in any of the seven classes of individual liberation vows, which are the cause of non-distraction. One should strive in listening, which is the cause of non-ignorance and is in accordance with seeing the truth. Then, as the cause of certainty, one should think about its meaning without error. Because one possesses the meaning of thought, one should diligently engage in the samadhi of meditating on that meaning as the cause of separation. As the sutra says: A monk who is diligent and constant, having properly taken the precepts, by meditating on mind and wisdom, will attain the exhaustion of suffering. It also says: Relying on precepts and abiding in precepts, one should practice the Dharma. And: Venerable, what is a monk who has heard much? By what measure does the Thus-Gone One call a monk one who has heard much? If a monk hears the Dharma for the sake of protecting the five aggregates, for the sake of being free from desire, and for the sake of cessation, then he can be called a monk who has heard much. Therefore, it is said. So, what are the wisdoms arising from listening, etc.? The Vaibhashikas believe that the wisdom arising from listening is wisdom, and the wisdoms arising from thinking and meditation, which are included in the rest, are, in order, name, sometimes letters lead to meaning, sometimes meaning leads to letters, so it is both name and meaning, and it enters into meaning without relying on letters, so it is only the object of meaning. For example, those who are not good at swimming, those who are slightly good at swimming, and those who are good at swimming, rely on something to hold on to, such as a board, sometimes rely on it and sometimes do not, and sometimes do not rely on it at all. The school believes that if this is the case, then those who focus on name are born from listening, and those who focus on meaning are born from meditation, so (apart from the two) what is born from thinking will not be established. Therefore, realizing the meaning from the teachings of confidence, from the analysis of reason, and from abiding in samadhi, are the three wisdoms in order. Thus it is said. In detail, there are the paths of accumulation and application.

O Mother! Among the three paths of seeing, firstly, the practitioner who meditates on the path should meditate in a state of possessing two kinds of renunciation—renunciation of the busyness of the body and renunciation of the non-virtuous thoughts and afflictions of the mind—while dwelling alone. This state of possessing two kinds of renunciation is for those who are content and have few desires, not for those who are discontent and have great desires. What are these two? The Sautrāntikas say that repeatedly craving and desiring the acquisition of abundant things like Dharma robes is discontent, and desiring those things that have not been acquired is great desire. Because the repeated craving for Dharma robes and the like is only because they have not been obtained, that too would become great desire. Therefore, the teachers say that being unhappy with obtaining little of inferior quality is discontent, and desiring to obtain much of good quality that has not been obtained is great desire. Or, desiring what has not been obtained before is great desire, and desiring better and more than what has been obtained is discontent. The opposite of discontent and great desire is the antidote to these two—contentment and few desires. These two antidotes, contentment and few desires, belong to the three realms such as the desire realm and are stainless, while discontent and great desire, because they are attachment and non-virtuous, belong to the desire realm. The nature of contentment and few desires is the virtue of non-attachment. These non-attachments are the lineage of the noble ones, because the noble ones are born from them. If we analyze the lineage of the noble ones, the sutra says: There are four lineages of the noble ones, namely, non-attachment to Dharma robes, non-attachment to alms, non-attachment to bedding and cushions, and delight in renunciation and meditation. Among these, the first three are the nature of contentment. If it is said, how is the fourth lineage of the noble ones the nature of non-attachment, since it is not the essence of contentment? The fourth is also non-attachment because it turns its back on desire and existence; renunciation is cessation and meditation is the path, and delighting in these is non-attachment, as well as the corresponding faith. So, what do the four lineages of the noble ones reveal? Among them, the first three reveal liberation.
