I eliminate what is to be abandoned through both the path of seeing (such as the Dharma-kshanti and Anvaya-kshanti of the path) and the path of cultivation, each in its appropriate way. The noble ones do so through the path of seeing, while ordinary beings do so even through the worldly path of cultivation, which views higher realms as coarse and lower realms as subtle. Therefore, it is said in the treatises: The Blessed One said that hearers eliminate through the path of seeing, while ordinary beings eliminate through the path of cultivation. In all realms, those afflictions to be abandoned by cultivation that cannot be overcome by subtle increase of forbearance (the four non-view-afflictions as explained), those that are to be overcome by knowledge (since they are objects to be abandoned without wrongly entering into the truth, both ordinary beings and noble ones) are to be abandoned only by the path of cultivation, because it is impossible for the path of seeing to abandon afflictions to be abandoned by cultivation. The path of cultivation is both worldly and transcendent. Therefore, it should be known that the path of seeing is only transcendent, while the path of cultivation exists in both worldly and transcendent forms. In this regard, the Sutra School and Yoga practitioners and others say that it is impossible for ordinary beings to abandon what is to be abandoned by seeing. If it is thought that it can be abandoned by the worldly path of cultivation, then the sutra says that childish ordinary beings with a mind of meditative concentration, detached from desire, will have wrong views focused on desire towards external ascetics and Brahmins, such as the view of permanence, the view of annihilation, and the view of causelessness, and these are also what is to be abandoned by seeing in the desire realm. How is it said? In the Great Sutra of Distinguishing Actions, it says: Ananda, here someone abstains from killing to abstaining from wrong view, but is not happy with this, nor does he rejoice in it. After the destruction of the body, upon death, he will be born into the evil realms, evil destinies, the wrong falling, into the hells. Those external heretics, whether ascetics or Brahmins, who possess miraculous powers, possess the divine eye, and know the minds of others, seeing this, will think, this person has neither practiced well with the body, nor is there any ripening of having practiced well with the body.
