Accordingly, equanimity also corresponds universally to the base, consciousness, and all afflictions and near afflictions. Therefore, the commentators also say that ignorance and equanimity, both of which are equally present with any affliction and near affliction, are not obstructed. The remaining secondary afflictions, shamelessness, lack of embarrassment, agitation, and sleep, these four can correspond to the five sense faculties. The first two are the basis of non-virtue, and the latter two are the great basis of affliction. These also occur in the retinue of all six consciousnesses, because all six can be non-virtuous and afflicted. Eleventh, explaining the five obscurations, the sutra says: Desire for desire, malice, dullness, sleep, agitation, regret, and doubt are said to be the five obscurations. Desire, malice, sleep, and regret are in the desire realm, but dullness, agitation, and doubt exist in all three realms, so are these included in all three realms? No, because they obscure meditation, liberation, samadhi, and absorption, so these five obscurations are only in the desire realm. The sutra says: Monks, those who say that the five obscurations are a collection of non-virtue are speaking truthfully. Why? Monks, this is a collection of non-virtue, unmixed, completely perfect, like these five obscurations, because the sutra says that the five obscurations are entirely non-virtuous. Also, why are dullness and sleep, and agitation and regret, although they are different mental factors, spoken of as one obscuration each? Although dullness and sleep exist, they are spoken of as one obscuration, because their incompatible antidote is the same, their food, that is, the cause of arising, is the same, and their function is also the same. Among them, the incompatible aspect of both is the perception of light, which is also called the antidote and non-food. There are five foods: madness, displeasure, laziness, inappropriate food temperature, and discouragement, because these cause the two to increase. The function of these two is to discourage the mind. Similarly,

Moreover, agitation and regret are also considered as one obscuration, because they have the same opposing factors, food, and function. The opposing factor of these two is calm abiding (shamatha). The food is fourfold: conceptual thoughts about relatives, conceptual thoughts about objects, conceptual thoughts about immortality, and remembering past laughter, play, and enjoyment. The function is that both make the mind unpacified. If all afflictions and near afflictions are obscurations, then why are only the five obscurations taught as obscurations? Because desire and aversion do not separate from desire and sin, while sloth-torpor and agitation-regret respectively distance insight (vipashyana) and calm abiding. Therefore, they respectively harm the three aggregates of discipline, wisdom, and concentration. If there is no concentration and wisdom, doubt will doubt the aggregates of concentration and wisdom or the truth. Therefore, it is taught as the five obscurations. Others are not like that, so say most of the Vaibhashikas. Some say that if that were the case, the sutra would mention agitation-regret before sloth-torpor. But that is not so, because sloth-torpor and agitation-regret respectively harm the aggregates of concentration and wisdom. Those who strive for concentration and wisdom are frightened by these, because they resemble them and deceive them. Similarly, doubt is also harmful to wisdom, because it creates obstacles when one rises to ascertain the Dharma. That is their view, and the rest is the same as before. The earlier teachers thought that when a meditator goes on alms rounds, if he fixates on pleasant and unpleasant objects, attachment and aversion will arise. Therefore, first, in the preliminary practice of entering concentration, there will be desire and aversion. Then, when entering concentration, in the actual calm abiding, there will be sloth-torpor. Agitation-regret will obstruct insight, and doubt will obstruct ascertaining the Dharma after rising from concentration. Therefore, it is taught as the five obscurations.
