Except for those five, the other eleven are only born from the desire realm. Furthermore, among the root and near afflictions, all that are abandoned by seeing and abandoned by meditation (because it is looking inward), but sleep and pride, etc., are aspects of mental consciousness, because they are accompanied by investigation and are not clear, therefore they do not arise as retinues of anything other than mental consciousness. Similarly, the eleven independent near afflictions are also abandoned by meditation, but because they are accompanied by investigation, they are aspects of mind. Other than sleep and pride, which are abandoned by seeing and abandoned by meditation, the afflictions and near afflictions, the two undetermined attachment and aversion that are abandoned by meditation, the two aspects of unwholesomeness, and the six aspects of great afflictions are all dependent on all six consciousnesses. Furthermore, with which of the five feelings are these afflictions and near afflictions associated? They are associated with pleasure and joy, and with the aspect of delight, because they are associated with desire, because they arise as retinues of all six consciousnesses, so the retinues of the five sense consciousnesses and mental consciousness are associated with physical pleasure and joy, respectively. Hatred arises in the aspect of aversion, and contrary to attachment and pleasure, etc., it is associated with suffering and displeasure. Similarly, arising in the retinues of the five consciousnesses and mental consciousness, it is associated with suffering and displeasure, respectively. The five abandonments, or ignorance that is mixed and unmixed, are associated with all five feelings, as appropriate, because they are associated with all consciousnesses and all afflictions. The wrong view that denies the four truths, that is, those who hold wrong views, the sins and merits they commit, respectively, believe that sins and merits will not produce results, and that effort is futile, therefore they are associated with pleasure and suffering, that is, displeasure. Displeasure is associated with doubt, because when one doubts engaging in what one seeks, one also feels displeasure. Other than these, the four views and pride are associated with pleasure, because they are only aspects of mind.

Because it enters in a manner of joy. (The view of annihilation is also characterized by joy.) Those are also considered from the perspective of arising from desire, because there is no suffering (such as anger and displeasure) in the higher realms, and also because happiness is absent from the fourth dhyana onwards. Equanimity is equally present with all afflictions, because the cessation of afflictions necessarily entails equanimity. As the commentary states: All these subtle distinctions are equally present with the faculty of equanimity; when afflictions cease, equanimity invariably abides everywhere. The Compendium of Abhidharma also states: Why are all afflictions equally present with equanimity? Because they decline by relying on being in an ordinary state. The afflictions of the higher realms, form and formless, are equally present with the consciousness and sensory faculties of each realm, just as the ground is. It has already been explained how many consciousnesses and sensations are in each realm. Among the secondary afflictions, the six from regret to resentment are equally present with displeasure, because these are feelings that enter in a manner of sorrow, and because they do not enter in a manner of joy, they are not equally present with pleasure, and because they are solely mental objects, they are also not equally present with suffering. Miserliness is equally present with displeasure, the opposite of those six, because it arises from the cause of attachment, so it enters in a manner of joy, and because it is solely a mental object, it is equally present with pleasure. Deceit and pretense, concealment and sleep, when the actions of deceit and pretense are accomplished or not, they become pleasant and unpleasant respectively, and sleep is not contrary to anything, and because all are objects of mental consciousness, they are equally present with both pleasure and displeasure. Because it enters in a manner of joy and is solely a mental object, pride is equally present with the mental happiness of the third dhyana and the mind of the second dhyana and below, and because there is no happiness beyond the fourth dhyana, it is only equally present with equanimity. Just as ignorance is equally present with any affliction and secondary affliction.
