These are debated. However, it is reasonable to say that it arises from attachment because one conceals out of fear of the loss of gain, respect, and discipline. From ignorance arise mental dullness, sleep, and shamelessness, because there is no dullness or sleep in order to make the object clear, and because one does not know that the result of sin is suffering, one is not afraid of sin. From doubt arises non-virtuous regret, because those who doubt that the result of virtue is happiness regret doing good. Anger and jealousy arise from the cause of anger, because universal torment arises from hatred, and because one's mind is disturbed by the perfection of others and cannot bear it. Ninth, explaining defilements, furthermore, the sutra also speaks of six kinds of defilements of afflictions, which are from deceit to harming. The nature of these has already been explained. From which root affliction do they arise? Deceit and pride arise from attachment, because one practices deceit out of fear of the loss of gain, etc., and because one's mind is pleased by attachment to one's own dharma. Holding grudges and harming arise from being driven by hatred, so holding grudges and harming sentient beings arise, therefore they arise from anger. Indignation arises from holding views as supreme, because one clings to one's own views and is indignant towards others. The sutra says: What is cunning? It is the view of a sinner. Therefore, deceit is driven by wrong views, because one who has wrong views (of karma and its results) is not upright in mind and practices deceit. (The sutra also says:) What is permanent? It is nirvana. What is impermanent? It is conditioned phenomena. What is upright? It is the noble path. What is cunning? It is the view of a sinner. Explaining the distinguishing characteristics of these ten, which are the ten secondary afflictions, which are they? From these, shamelessness, lack of shame, dullness, sleep, and excitement, these five, those that are similar to and possess what is to be abandoned by seeing and what is to be abandoned by meditation, are in order what is to be abandoned by seeing and what is to be abandoned by meditation, so they are both. Among these, shamelessness and lack of shame are associated with all non-virtue, and dullness and excitement are associated with all afflictions.

Also similarly possessed. Sleep is the object of the mind, and in the desire realm it is similarly possessed with all actions. Other than these five, the near afflictions encompassed by pervasive entanglement, such as jealousy, stinginess, regret, anger, and concealment, are only to be abandoned through cultivation because they do not directly or indirectly contradict the truth (and enter the object), and they are also self-sufficient, because they are the same as the ignorance to be abandoned through cultivation. If someone asks, what is the reason that whatever is the same as ignorance is necessarily self-sufficient? Because when they arise, they themselves are the main ones, and they do not depend on other afflictions such as desire. Although they are the same as ignorance, ignorance is foolish, so it is not caused by it to arise. This is the explanation of Master Gampopa. (They themselves have great power, and are not controlled by desire, etc., like ignorance, etc.) Just as the near afflictions such as jealousy are to be abandoned through cultivation and are self-sufficient, so are the six stains to be abandoned through cultivation and are self-sufficient. The seven pervasive entanglements, such as shamelessness, and the six stains are unwholesome in the desire realm. The three, agitation, drowsiness, and sleep, although sleep has wholesome aspects, but because it is in the category of pervasive entanglement (it is not wholesome), so it is both obscured and unspecified and unwholesome. Above the desire realm, the near afflictions that exist in the two upper realms are obscured and unspecified. Furthermore, in which realm and ground are these near afflictions located and how many are there? In the desire realm and the first dhyana, there is deceit. In the Sutra of the Vinaya Pitaka, it is said that the noble Ashvajit asked Brahma, where do these four great elements completely cease? Brahma did not know, but said, "I am Brahma, the Great Brahma, the Lord, the maker, the accomplisher, the giver, the place of giving, the cause of all things." The Great Brahma used deceitful words to turn the conversation elsewhere and deceive the noble Ashvajit. Because (it is the object of affliction), so drowsiness and agitation, and the three types of pride (which do not contradict in any place) are all in the three realms. These three and the two types of deceit
