Therefore, please understand well that these three pervasive practices are the gates that block the city of liberation. Furthermore, the sutra says, "Because of abandoning the five that are in accordance with the higher realms, one is a noble Arhat." The five that are said to be in accordance with the higher realms are the two desires born from the form and formless realms, as well as agitation, pride, and pervasive ignorance. Why? Because without abandoning these, one cannot transcend the higher realms, and because they are to be abandoned through meditation. (Because they are the cause of not abandoning the higher realms, the three are separated individually, and because they are the cause of approaching the higher realms, the two desires are separated.) Anger is to be abandoned through meditation, but because it is not in the higher realms. Sixth, explaining the bonds, the sutra says, "What are the bonds? There are three bonds, namely, the bond of all desire, all hatred, and all ignorance." This is because (these bind the mind, making it unfree, so they are bonds.) The Sutra of the Bhikshuni Dharma Gift says, "Desire increases with the feeling of pleasure, hatred increases with the feeling of suffering, and ignorance increases with the feeling of neither pleasure nor suffering." Therefore, due to the influence of feelings such as pleasure, these desires and so on bind samsara, so they are said to be three bonds. This is because from the three feelings such as pleasure, the three poisons increase sequentially through the means of object and association. The Compendium of Topics says that because the three poisons sequentially bind the suffering of change, the suffering of suffering, and the suffering of conditioning, they are called bonds. This is also in terms of the majority of cases, but sometimes hatred and desire also increase by focusing on the pleasure and pain of the enemy. That is, for one's own pleasure and pain, it increases through both object and association, while for the pleasure and pain of others, it is through the means of object. For equanimity, both attachment and aversion increase, but because the two are not clearly consistent with ignorance, they will increase even more, so the teacher Gangpel explains. Seventh, explaining the near afflictions, refers to arising from a mind with afflictions other than the six root afflictions...

That which is called "the aggregate of doing" is also close to the root afflictions, so it is a near affliction. But they should not be called root afflictions, because they are not the root. These include pervasiveness, defilement, arising from trivial matters, displeasure, laziness, sinking mind, drowsiness, not knowing the amount of food, various thoughts, non-attention, physical heaviness, roughness, slander, shamelessness, embarrassment, non-abiding nature, desire thoughts, existence thoughts, relative thoughts, country thoughts, immortal thoughts, contemptuous thoughts, caste pride thoughts, sorrow, suffering, unpleasantness, and disturbance, these twenty-four. The meaning of these should be understood as explained in the Ratnavali and the Sangrahavastu. Eighth, explaining pervasiveness: these pervade beings in the prison of existence, or because of these, evil deeds arise, so they are pervasive. So, what are these? From shamelessness to sleep, there are eight kinds of pervasiveness, as explained in the commentary. The Vaibhashikas believe that these eight plus anger and concealment make ten. Their nature has been explained earlier. Here, regret becomes pervasive because regret is unwholesome. These are born from root afflictions, so what are the root afflictions born from? Attachment can give rise to shamelessness, impudence, and stinginess, because attachment to one's own dharma leads to disrespect for others; because attachment to desirable qualities leads to a scattered mind; and because attachment to possessions and so on leads to clinging. Some believe that concealment is born from attachment, while others believe it is born from ignorance. Still others say that it is born from both, that is, those who know they have faults are born from attachment, and those who do not know they have faults are born from ignorance, and the statements are inconsistent.
