First, the nature of subtle increase. First, the nature of subtle increase. First, regarding the classification of subtle increase and the detailed explanation of the differences in its forms, the first of the two is, as stated in the fourth chapter, that karma produces various worlds, and these karmas are also accumulated by the power of subtle increase (and can project ripening results). Without subtle increase, defiled karma will not be accumulated, and without karma, samsara will not be accomplished. (Otherwise, if there were uncertain karma, even arhats should have rebirth, so it is not.) It should be known that the root of samsara is subtle increase. On this, Master Gangpa says: "The chariot of birth is for a child, Riding this, possessing the wheel of afflictions and karma, If one wheel of afflictions is weakened, The wheel of karma alone does not turn." Thus it is said that karma projects the next life, and subtle increase is the root that makes it manifest and accomplished. Samsara is the next life itself, and its root is subtle increase, as explained. Master Prince Royal, however, believes that samsara here refers to both the next life and its cause, the karma of samsara. Its root is subtle increase, because when afflictions arise, they perform ten actions, as explained. These ten actions are: (Due to continuousness) Making the root firm, the continuity of attainment. (Due to repeatedly arising) Maintaining the lineage, the continuity of subtle increase. (Due to producing the years of the body) The field is one's own continuum, the basis of subtle increase. Accomplishing similar causes, generating near afflictions. Accomplishing the karma of samsara. Clinging to one's own aggregates improperly. Completely ignorant of the object, is unknowing. Leading the stream of consciousness, projecting into samsara. Deviating from virtuous actions, is decline. Bondage, not transcending the realm. (That is, any affliction that belongs to a realm will be an obstacle to transcending that realm, as such.) The ten forms are also considered to be very well explained here. Thus it is said. If one were to distinguish subtle increase, there are temporarily six types, namely: desire, as well as anger, pride, ignorance, view, and doubt. (The desire to cling to the aggregates of appropriation as self will cause the other five to also increase with respect to the object, because they increase from clinging to what is mine due to self-view and craving.)

The realm of the uncontaminated and the unequal does not increase. The numerical determination is: The upper commentary says that the three poisons of food, behavior, and feeling deeply enter sentient beings, giving rise to pride. To abandon perversion, wrong views arise. And doubt, that is, wrong certainty and uncertainty. Thus, these six aspects are also said to be seven, thus connected. How is it done? In the sutra, desire is divided into the subtle defilements of desire for desire and the subtle defilements of desire for existence. (Subtle defilements are obtained by the Sarvastivadins, the Samghikas, and the Sthaviras, and the Sautrantikas believe that seeds exist.) Here, this analysis should be done: If (it is the sixth of the same basis) desire, is desire itself a subtle defilement, so is it the subtle defilement of desire? Or (is it the sixth of different basis) a subtle defilement different from desire for desire (because it is the subtle defilement of desire)? If according to the first view, (in the Middle Length Discourses) the sutra says, here some people do not often abide in the mind entangled by desire for desire, and even if the entanglement of desire for desire arises, later they truly know its arising as it is, and through strength, they fully possess and abandon the entanglement of desire for desire together with the subtle defilements. Thus, it contradicts the sutra's statement that entanglement and subtle defilements are different. If according to the second view, subtle defilements will become attainment, because it is a non-corresponding formation, so in the Abhidharma it says: The subtle defilements of desire for desire are associated with three feelings. Which three? It is associated with the feelings of pleasure, joy, and equanimity. This contradicts what is said. If it is said that because it is said to be associated there, then the Sarvastivadins say that desire itself is a subtle defilement, so the explanation of (afflictions) in the Abhidharma is a characteristic, the sound of being with subtle defilements in the sutra refers to other afflictions related to desire, etc., or because it is said by establishing it on attainment, so there is no contradiction. Therefore, the mind is the cause of affliction, the cause of obscuration, and the cause of opposition to virtue.
