and virtue is also because of the object, therefore, it is explained here that it is not possessing subtle defilements. The Sutra masters say that subtle defilements are neither obtained nor completely entangled, but are latent. Therefore, complete entanglement is the manifestation of subtle defilements, and latency is the seed of subtle defilements. Therefore, what is said in the Sutras is the nature, and we do not quote the treatises, they say. The Sthavira school believes that not possessing subtle defilements is attainment. If desire is craving for the contaminated, then among the two, desire-attachment is the desire-attachment of the desire realm, then what is existence-attachment? The desire-attachment arising from the upper two realms is existence-attachment, because they are free from desire-attachment to desire, but are still desire-attachment that throws into existence.\ Also, why are the desire-attachments of the two realms combined and made into existence-attachment? The reason is that although they have attachment to palaces and so on, most of them crave for meditative absorption, so the mouth looks inward and enters, and, it is completely obscured and not predicted, and it is similar to meditative equipoise, and, that is unpredicted, the mouth looks inward, the place of meditative equipoise, so it is said to be one, because both are completely obscured and not predicted. The need is, if that is meditative equipoise, then the two realms are there, for them (thinking that obtaining the four dhyanas obtains the four fruits), the thought of liberation arises. If desiring liberation is the intention for virtuous dharmas, then craving for liberation for the upper two realms and their cause, the two meditative absorptions, is existence-attachment and not liberation, in order to prevent the thought of thinking it is true liberation, so the two are said to be existence-attachment, this is the view of the Vibhajyavādins. The teacher thinks that beings are free from desire-attachment to desire, and, only crave for the body that is the basis of meditative absorption, the body is existence, and, it is not focused on desirable qualities, so existence-attachment is combined into one, it should be understood in this way.\ Also, those six subtle defilements in Dharmaśrī Abhidharma
