It is also explained that there are ten views. How so? Views are divided into five: the view of the aggregates of existence, the view of denying, the wrong view, (especially the view of superimposition), the view of holding to extremes, the view of holding views as supreme, and the view of holding moral discipline and asceticism as supreme, thus adding these five. Although the view of holding to extremes follows the view of the aggregates of existence, here, to match the verses, the wrong view is explained after it. If views are differentiated, then wouldn't pride also be differentiated for the same reason? They are not the same. Because views have different aspects and functions, while pride has only one aspect of arrogance, and its function is also only one. (Some say that views are very faulty and must be abandoned, and that they pervade knowledge, so they are divided into many, which is too extreme compared to ignorance, so it is unreasonable. Some say that there are seven types of pride, but the general characteristic and the action of mental arrogance are only one, so it is placed as one, which is the same for views, because views also have only one action of reversing the mind.) Rogna says that the view of things arises from what has come before, and pride does not arise from one thing, so they are placed as five and one, respectively. The reason for this is also the greatness of things, like the number of eyes on a face. Saying this is simply not finding a reason. Therefore, Zhaqogna says that these are distinguished by the difference in their objects, because views have five different ways of grasping, while pride has seven, but only one way of grasping. Some say that the ways of grasping are different for both. Therefore, differentiating here according to the degree of possibility is not correct, because attachment and ignorance, etc., also have this. However, due to the need, namely to correctly understand the views of non-Buddhists, and to show that this is not the case, but is abandoned by the path of seeing, the sutras say so.

Thus, the commentators explain. If so, wouldn't pride not be divided into seven types? Those are dependent on the object, not a distinction in terms of aspects. Furthermore, in the Treatise on Abhidharma, these ten subtle latent tendencies are also explained as ninety-eight. How so? These ten subtle latent tendencies, in the desire realm, the first two views (self-view and extreme view) also wrongly adhere to the aggregates of clinging as the fruit, therefore all ten that are abandoned by seeing the truth of suffering, and the seven that are abandoned by seeing the truth of origin, and the seven that are abandoned by seeing the truth of cessation, (the two extreme views adhere to the five aggregates of clinging, which is only abandoned by seeing the truth of suffering. The adherence to ethics and discipline, viewing those aggregates as pure liberation, also adheres to the first and last truths, but these two extreme views do not.) The eight that are abandoned by seeing the truth of the path. Because they do not wrongly adhere directly or indirectly, except for the first two views and the fifth (adherence to ethics and discipline) of the truth of origin and cessation, and except for the first two views of the truth of the path. Therefore, these ten, seven, seven, and eight subtle latent tendencies, directly or indirectly wrongly adhere to the four noble truths, (these thirty-two) through seeing the self-characteristics of the four noble truths such as suffering in the desire realm, they gradually abandon these things to be abandoned. (Thus, extreme views are the door to one type of abandonment, wrong view, view of holding views as supreme, and doubt are directed towards the four noble truths, so they are four doors, adherence to ethics and discipline adheres to the first and last truths, so they are two doors, these are all abandoned by seeing. The four, attachment, anger, pride, and ignorance, will become both abandoned by seeing and abandoned by meditation, so they become five each in turn.) Therefore, in the desire realm, subtle latent tendencies abandoned by seeing (these are abandoned by merely seeing the truth, so they are abandoned by seeing) are thirty-two. The four, attachment, anger, pride, and ignorance, are also to be abandoned by meditation, so the things to be abandoned become five types, because the innate of the four, attachment, etc., is not abandoned merely by seeing the truths, and the imputed is able to be abandoned, so they are both types. The five views and doubt are only abandoned by seeing because they are abandoned merely by seeing the truths.
